Best bet might be to trawl the component deals and build one.

CEX can be a good source of cheap bits also.

I'm no expert but I do build my own PCs and built my son what I would think was a half decent mid spec gaming rig for his xmas. Got some bits from Amazon warehouse - all 20% off at moment - and some bits I justified expense by early upgrades to my own PC.

Take your time and the bits slot together easier than lego.

I'm a fan of AMD purely for budget reasons and for £500 you could buy -

990fx gaming MB - used v good @ £95

That leaves you c.£150 for a graphics card and an SSD. You couldgo for 8GB ram to make a bit of a saving then spend £150 on the graphics card.
