I'm looking for a digital camera, around 10Mp and uncertain as to what zoom I should get - is 5* optical the standard these days?

Don't mind what make and open to suggestions.

thanks,

Personally I would shy away from a camera with any more than a 5x zoom, simply because they suffer from under exposure or camera shake. and also they tend to have very wide angle lenses when on minimum zoom which may be great for some people but not me as I find I am zooming even when the subject is 4 feet away.

As regards brands, i have been using a Sony W1 for around 3 years now and find it excellent, although originally Memory stick were very expensive, but they are not now.
I also moved over to DSLR middle of last year with a Canon and have found the Canon equipment to be absolutly fantastic. I know its out of your price range. but you could look at the Pixma range they are closer to your budget.
A good reference site is this http://www.dpreview.com/ the reviews are from real people. This site helped me when going for the DSLR

thanks guys. I like the look of the Sony but nowhere seems to have stock !

I'm thinking of the "canon powershot sx120 is" and because I have £100 in vouchers at amazon makes sense to go through them.

Any thoughts on the canon guys?

The canon one you have suggested will be perfect, the focal range is better being Focal range of 36-360mm

Also If you plan to use the very long lens(max zoom), I would invest in a Tripod as you might get camera shake or worse still the Camera will auto adjust the ISO setting and you will get a grainy image.

I have a Gorilla Pod, its great it grabs onto most things so that you don't need a flat surface. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Joby-GP1-D1EN-Gorillapod-Original-Black/dp/B000EVSLRO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1266229954&sr=1-1

When you buy an SD card for it, make sure its a fast one, if you plan to use it in movie mode. It will take the SDHC cards, so personally I would by 2x 4gb ones rather than 1x8gb one

PS the sony one in Silver can be found here

Personally I use 7dayshop for my rechargables. They are a bit slow on delivery but you tend to be able to get High capacity ones including a charger for good money such as below;

PS I think I will buy one of those Canon Camera's to replace my aging Sony
