Looking for a good deal on an AMD 64 X2 4800+ (or 4600+) socket 939 CPU - Thanks

My motherboard has a socket 939 on it and can take up to an AMD X2 4800+ CPU.

I am looking for either a 4800+ (or a 4600+ would do) CPU, but can't seem to find any reasonable deal on one of these CPU's.

Are there any around, at a decent price ?

I take it that the new AM2 CPU won't fit the socket 939 ?

Thanks,
Kevin.

No, AM2 socket processors wont fit socket 939 mobos.

You can get a 4000+ socket 939 (but not even X2) for £41.54 delivered via google checkout on ebuyer here..

But I think the socket 939 range have been discontinued now. I'd advise to upgrade your mobo to an AM2 socket as they aren't too expensive and you can get better deals on AM2 socket processors and better performance.

Yes, sounds like my best bet is to purchase an AM2 board (needs to be Micro-ATX : am looking at the Abit Fatal1ty) and a new AM2 processor.

It will probably work out cheaper than a S939 AMD CPU off Ebay (about £180ish !!)

Cheers,
Kevin.

Just pointing out that AM2 boards take DDR2 memory, so if you don't have any you would need to purchase some along with your CPU and motherboard.

What I really should have mentioned is that I currently have a AMD 64 3700+ CPU, so it really isn't worth putting anything less than a 4600+ as the increase in performance for anything below that wouldn't be worth the expense.

Also, I forgot about the memory, I will have to factor that cost in too...Darn !

try and get hold of a AMD Opteron 165 dual core, 1mb cache, sk939

not sold new anymore, but you can get a bargain on ebay, they clock to 3ghz!

Yer shame about the memory, although i think there was a deal posted earlier for DDR2 memory...might be worth a look.

An X2 4400 would be an ideal upgrade for you (3700 + 4400 both have 1mb cache) but i cant find them anywhere. S/hand on ebay i suppose is your best bet or put a wanted ad on here.

Edit: i meant 4400 2mb cache (1mb per core)

Hmmm, that's given me some food for thought.

Which would you say is the better deal:

Opteron 165 - £90 delivered or
AMD 4200+ 64 X2 - £70 delivered

Bearing in mind, my current motherboard does not overclock, although I may change my m/b in the future, depending on the price of some new RAM.

Thanks,
Kevin.
