Looking for a laptop sub £300 mark - but must have XP, not Vista!

As the title says really.

Had ordered a £200 refurb from Currys but couldn't work with Vista - too many problems, so it was returned.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for a new / refurb laptop. To be used for simple accounts / admin and surfing the net - so anything would do as games / films will not be on it.

All I can find is new machines with Vista..and I'm not going there again!

Thanks.

im looking for a cheap refurb myself for my son, was the one from Currys in good cosmetic condition, as I was looking at the refurbs on PC Worlds site and they said theres can sometimes come with marks or scratches but Currys and Dixons say theyre like new, as I wouldnt want a scratched one even if it was a refurb. I'll let you know if I find anything as there are a few sites that sell refurbs but it takes time looking round.

Thanks dad! :whistling:

The laptop was in good condition overall - some slight cosmetic scratches on the outer case badge showed it as being a recon though.

Otherwise, it was boxed like new with discs etc. I've had a recon before - from Dixons and although it had 3 repairs in a year they replaced it under the 3 strikes rule, so ended up buying a new one eventually.

However I struggled with Vista - my software wouldn't work before I even tried any hardware. Not being able to install virus checkers and other basic software put me right off.

At least XP is reliable and solid, instead of this security mad Vista. Plus hopefully will come in cheaper too...

I'm just about to list a laptop on EBay, you can have that for £250 if you want ... save me the hassle !!!

Its a Dell Lattitude D610.
Pentium M 1.7G, 2Gb RAM, 40 Gig Hard Drive, DVD/CDRW, WiFi. All formatted with XP reinstalled.

Thanks for the offer, but it's a new laptop that I need. It's for a charity, so a receipt is needed, as well as a warranty.

Hence the need for a machine currently running XP - it's too much hassle to wipe it and put XP on it. Probably invalidate the warranty if I did anyway.

no changing software does not invalidate warrenty, and u might be eligable for the microsoft downgrade program designed for people who cant use vista, so look on the ms website as it may save u a lot of work
