hi, i know i've missed out on all the offers but if anyone could find a decent pc with a good spec, gfx card is important as i'll be playing a lot of pretty new games inc medievel 2 total war which needs to support play for several thousand troops. in any case i'll also use it to for office applications and to go on the internet. i can spend up to around £500 and all i need is the actual system bar the monitor etc. although if you found a complete set it would save me having to salvage a monitor from my old system. i'm also open to offers of PCs made from parts that i'll have to buy seperately but as i've never built a pc before i would appreciate if you could draw up a list of parts that will all work together (are compatable) and any recomendations for someone/a shop in london that could put all the parts together. thanks in advance.

Hello mate Dell have some awesome deals on at the moment, just take a look at this one for £410 delivered.

AMD® Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+
Genuine Windows® XP Professional SP2 (Incl Operating System Re-installation CD) - English
Dell 19" Value Flat Panel (E197FP) - UK/Irish
1024MB Dual Channel DDR2 533MHz [2x512] Memory
160GB (7200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive with 8MB DataBurst cache
48x CDRW/DVD Combo Drive
Integrated nVidia® GeForce® 6150 LE graphics
Integrated 7.1 Channel High Definition Audio
Dell 2 Button USB Wheel Mouse - Black
Free Upgrade to McAfee® Security Centre 36-month Protection
Microsoft® Works 8 - English

That is an awesome price. It even comes with a 19" TFT. That would leave you £90 for a graphics card. You could put in your own DVD writer at a later date if you really needed to. You could even sell your old system and put all the money together and get a high end graphics card. (Not sure what your old system is worth though).

which is better intel or amd? i only ask because i always thought that intel made better chips but having talked to a lot of people they prefer amd. when i say intel and amd don't misquote me and go on about the range, i'm talking about similarly priced processors that would be natural competitors. whats the differance between the core 2 duo and the core duo?
#6
The Intel core 2 duo is a brand new technology, they are the fastest processors ever to be released. Up until these Core 2 Duo processors, AMD were the daddy, especially with their X2 chips.

AMD still make good chips but they are struggling to keep up with Intel's new Core 2 Duo.

To find a ready made PC with Core 2 Duo is proving difficult under £500, especially to match the specs that Dell throw out, you really cannot beat that price above anywhere on the planet.

Correct beerman1....you'll not get a Intel core 2 PC including a decent monitor for £500...the nearest is this but with a 17 inch panel

Hiya mate,

Dude that is a good price, I went onto PC next day after searching for core 2 duo and the one it gave me was a £499 base unit for an AMD 3700. Eeeek, so I logged straight off.

That is a really good setup mate, in fact better than the Dell one, a bit more expensive and only a 17" monitor and only XP home.

But you get a bigger hard drive, better processor, DVD writer, AND a 7600GS dedicated graphics card which not the best but is fantastic in this price range.

Zombie may I suggest looking into Curry's link as it looks like this could be your new PC mate.

cheers beerman, you've earned your pint but will the gfx card on the currys deal be futureproof till about next year when i can save up to get a new one? also any ideas over what kind of setup i could get if i bought all the parts separately from someone like scan, only problem is i don't no whether my selections would be compatible so thats why i came online. sorry if this is proving to be a tough hunt but i'm a student so money is scarce. thanks a lot to all of you though.

Hello mate, when I said Curry's link I meant Currychops. This link here:

Yes that card will be fine for another year, will play games on medium settings at a good frame rate. As for buying seperate, for just a base unit here is what I have found from Ebuyer, I am not going through loads of companies as Ebuyer tend to be the cheapest over a wide range of items. Will you need an OS as this will take a good £60/£70 out of your budget.

Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86ghz - Skt775 Fsb1066 2mb Cache Boxed In

ASUS P5V-VM DH Pentium 4/Celeron/Pentium D/65nm dual-core/Core2Duo

Kingston Valueram 2Gb 667MHz DDR2 Non Ecc CL5 Kit Of 2 X 1GB

Casecom Black/Silver Midi Tower Case With Front Panel LCD - No PSU

Coolermaster eXtreme Power 380W PSU - ATX12V V2.01 20+4pin 1x PCI-E 2x SATA

Sony AW-G170AB2 18xDVD±RW/RAM Dual Layer Writer Black - Bare Drive

Western Digital WD2500KS Caviar SE 250GB 7200RPM SATA2/300 16MB Cache - OEM

Sapphire X1900GT 256MB GDDR3 Dual DVI-I VIVO PCI-E (Best card you can get for £100).

Total cost: £552 delivered. To get it below £500 just take off 1gn of ram. But take into consideration you do not have an OS included in the price.

No mate have not even looked at anything in eBuyer sale, have not logged onto website today, I sdid see a post on here saying up to 20% off or something, just go to the site, search for the items I listed, add them to your basket as you come to them and see what the total is.

Bare in mind I forget to reduce the delivery cost to free delivery so you can take off another £8 or so on my price.
