Hi i'm looking for some ideas on mountain bikes wanna treat myself to a new bike, i'm looking to use it to get to work and back and also do a bit of off roading, done a bit of research and coming up with either a hybrid mountain bike or just a front suspension bike can spend between £200 - £350, also been told to go for something with hydraulic disc brakes...............? So any advice or places to look at i'd be most grateful.......

Something like this superb offering is all you are going to need, don't bother with disc brakes unless you are really serious, i've been Mtbiking for about 15years and managed fine without them. They add weight & cost.

As for the tyres to be changed to semi-slicks as well for on road

Don't bother with fullsuss with your budget...it will be a poor example and hinder progress on road.

This is well reviewed and owned by a very satisfied family member.

Several sites have it at good prices at the moment e.g.

Cheap shops include

Paulscycles.co.uk in Norfolk - all previous years bikes. You can probably get a £500 bike for £300

bonthronebikes.co.uk is another that does deals on old bikes.

Evans ahave some good clearence bikes

I would go for the Gary Fisher Marlin E 2007 Mountain Bike @ £299 great all round spec http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=70588 only in 21 inch but its a steal if it fits you

to be honest you dont need disc brakes or full suspension unless your gonna be doing some major downhilling - full sus on the road is a pain in the a## - as above get semi slicks for road use unless you want a good work out.

I'd stay away from the hybrids if your gonna go off road

Thanks for the advice mate so many bikes to choose but only one to be brought thank sfor all your advice guys..... What do people think off the dawes bike seems ok and right at the bottom end of my budget so saving myself some money.....!

Reading that, they do seem to go out of the way to talk about the frame being good.

It's always best to buy the best frame you can for the money - 'cos you'll normally end up swapping or replacing some of the bits over time.

once again guys the advice given is been great its looking like i might go for the dawes if i can get it for £209 unless someone can or wants to talk me out of it and i'm sure my other half would like me too go for that so then i can spend the difference on her.........

Hi folks i've got it down to these two now........
http://www.dalescycles.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=SPECHARDROCKSPTD07
or
http://www.ashcycles.com/power/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=371¤cy=BP
But for this one i'll have to pay £24 so it comes fully assembled i.e brakes and gears......! So this would be over £230.
So is it wise to go for the specialized.....? Oh and what colour blue or silver i'm **** at making my mind up?
#17
Just get the specialized, along with trek, marin etc they are right up there at the top of the mountain (ouch).....you can't go wrong at that price.

Just do it......you won't regret it.....blue looks good....find silver a bit plain on mtb's
#18
Thanks for the advice mikeyw......................
