Hi all new to this place and was looking for some advice. I am looking for a mountain bike hardtail for about £400 ish pounds, I like the look of the Gary Fisher Marlin Disc 2008 but can't find it in large, or maybe a Cannondale F6 disc. I also thought of the GT Avalance 1.0 but would like someone to advise me of which is the best spec. Thanks

I would suggest you tried the bikes because you will feel a difference and you will get a preference that way. When i got my fist mtb after doing some research i was all set to get a Specialized but then I rode it and didnt like it. Tried a Trek and bought it. Funny enough since then I sold my Trek and when I went to try a couple of more bikes I really liked the Specialized this time and got a Rockhopper Disc which is lovely and would highly reccomend. I also tried GT and Kona but was disappointed by the weight, as I prefer a lighter bike. I also tried a Marin and if I could have warranted the price for my use I would have bought that!

This is a great bike for the money. My mate has this he loves it. I have the Rockhopper which is the frame up from this one.

Thanks for the advice guys, i would like to get one with discs, Now looking at the Scott Aspect 45, as only £299 though i preferably would like to spend the full amount of £400 to get the best spec for the cash, any comments,

I personally don't rate Scott's and I've never met anyone who's owned one, for £400 I'd be looking at Trek, Specialised, Kona or GT (not too sure about GT, I've got a Zaskar and XCR1000 and love them but never ridden anything lower down the range), just avoid things like Saracen.
Oh, and check out places like Wriggle and Chain Reaction but avoid Evans (pricey) and Bonthrone (long delivery times, no customer service, won't answer phone or reply to emails).

Are Evans bad, they looked good on some of the bikes i was looking at??

http://www.bikeradar.com MTB magazine that could outline best bike in the price range you require. You should find your locl stockist and take a test ride on each. Make sure you try it on the type of terain you will be mainly riding

Evans are generally overpriced but not bad as a retailer, still give good advice, etc.
One thing to bear in mind is that the new 2009 bikes are hitting the shops so they'll be selling off the 2008 models cheap, you should be able to get a decent £500+ bike for £400, or better if you're prepared to wait a bit.

There was a deal on here a few days ago for just this - £100 pounds off 2008 Specialized bikes. I think the V brake model was reduced from £500 to £400. It was free postage on all bikes too, but you should take into account what another poster on here has said - it really pays to at least sit on a bike before buying.
I posted on the Specialized thread myself but it seems to have disappeared??

how bout this one -

http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/rockhopper-disc-2008-mountain-bike-ec001452

just ordered one for myself ... having it delivered to the shop to get free delivery , this way I get them to check it over and get it set up properly...

been looking for ages for a bike and figure that these 08 models won't last forever especially at these prices ...

but act fast as apparently this bike is better than the incoming 09 version !

and don't go for the nasty red one !

I think better off spending a further £50 on an 08 rockhopper from Evens -

Excellent Deal! Well done! The OP can either get the new one or negotiate the price down on the one on Gumtree!

Hardtail just means it does not have rear suspension.

The Specialized Rockhopper Disc from Evans for £449 is a bargain. I have the same model and I paid £600 for it last Feb.
