For a 42" you can get the Samsung 42Q96 or 42Q97 for less than £700. Currys/Dixons on line do one model and all the other retailers do the other (to prevent price matching).

For a 50" again the same models 50Q96 or 50Q97 which can be got for just over £1100 with a 4 year D&G warranty from Crampton & Moore.

I have a Price Match from John Lewis at about £1250 on this and will make the decision where to buy as soon as I get the keys for my new house.

Alternatively how about a 42" Panasonic 42PX70 - just bought one myself  paid just under £800 (after MBNA vouchers) in the end from John Lewis with a stand

Great with SD which was one of my priorities; in my experience when trying to choose a TV this was what sold me on a plasma

Its new and if this is the case it will come with the manufacturers warranty. Not sure how long this is. I will try to find out.

Yep, Plasma TV's come with a 12 month warranty. The seller also has 99% feedback, so I think it would make a sound investment.
