Hi Everyone. I am looking to purchase a media player so I can watch all my downloaded movie files through my computer. The snag is I want to buy one that I can plug in my external Hard drive to, rathe rthan buy one where I insert an internal one.

My mate bought the Freecom 350i WLAN Media player off ebay and it seems to be a good model. It is costing around 120 pounds in online shops.

I was wondering if anyone out there knew of a better deal for it, or if there are any better media players out there and for how much?

Thanks in Advance :)

Have you thought about buying Xbox (old one, not 360) and softmodding it for XBMC? Much cheaper and better than any standalone device.

i was thining of getting a media centre as well.

There are several models to choose from such as dsm 520.

How much would it cost to turn an xbox into an xbox mc with 250GB hard drive.

I've got DSM320 (pretty much the same thing as 520 with the exception of HD). To put it nicely, there is no comparison between DSM and XBMC (Xbox). For example, DSM is not able to play every file you throw at it unless you are using TVersity and do on-the-fly transcoding. It is unable to use SMB partitions unless you are using UPnP AV server, which is able to do it for DSM.
If you're looking at DSM-like players, take a look at Netger EVO8000 - it is pricey but seems to be one of the best players around. Read review here .

Hi, i wouldnt have a clue how to convert the xbox over to play them and i fancy a brand new machine for my house for it and something my parents could use as well. I was looking for something i could plug in external hard drives cause i have quite a few and dont want to have to move everything on to an internal hard drive everytime? Anyone any ideas??

so long as your external hard drive is connected to a pc you could stream it over from teh xbox either wirelessly or with a cable. you can pick one up all ready modded cheap enough and they are easy to use. as said above they will play any format you throw at it and as a bonus you got a games machine should you ever fancy a game. you couild pick one up for as little as £40 i bet all ready done.

How technically minded are you? You can get Linksys NSLU2, attach USB drives to it, install UPnP AV server if you want DSM) or just get an Xbox with XBMC and it'll access all NSLU2 drives and play music/video/pictures off it. No PC needed.
