We bought mattresses to use as toppers got the grand kids bunk beds. Cheaper than some toppers but about four times thicker. Fantastic to sleep on. We've bought another one for a single bed at our house. Look here...seem very reliable.

Single £38
double £50
king size £60

Did you find these were hot and gave off a chemical smell?

I recently got the silent night 5 inch topper. got from very because it was already discounted to 80 ish. and I had 20% off new customer discount. all in all with postage I paid £70. the smell lasted for around 4 days, but I have a much better night sleep now!

After using memory foam toppers, there's no way I'd use an uncovered spring mattress again. However especially if you are getting a thick one, make sure that you have or can find sheets that fit.

OK I have 4 kids and tried them all so this is what we have ... eldest has a completely memory foam mattress quite firm but very comfortable, son has a 4 inch topper again fairly firm buy comfy and I have a 1 inch topper after using a 3 inch and I much prefer it its so much softer and helps my painful hip! I actually believe less is more if it's a soft sinking bed you want. however I needed the 3 inch when I had a bad mattress as could feel the springs but if it's just firmness your dealing with then 1 inch is plenty.
this is just my opinion

I bought mine from pound stretcher under 30 quid worth a look

lol! I was indecisive between the 2.5 inch and 5. glad I got the 5! not much price difference, and glad I went bigger!

Bought Silentnight 7zone memory foam double mattress two years ago for £140 on Amazon and after a few days the smell disappear.Never noticed it being hot even on the hottest nights, its not cold when you first get in bed like the previous sprung mattress .
What topper might be ok for one person might be to hard soft for another.Just go by reviews and your price range.

Are you sure it's 5 inch not 5cm? 5 inch seems higher than any topper I've been able to find.

How deep is the mattress you put the topper on please. Mine is quite deep so wondering if it will fit. Does it zip in or just tuck in over edges of mattress please. Thanks

Does it cover whole of mattress like sleeping bag or is it like a fitted sheet just over the corners? thanks

I have a 5cm mattress topper, bought on eBay IIRC. I've had it around 6 years and think it was around £30-£35 for a double bed, and it's still going strong. I have fibromyalgia and it's one of the best things I've ever bought. My advice is to spend as much as you can afford on one, but the cheaper ones should be sufficient for at least several years.

Did you do any comparisons of Silentnight Impress and John Lewis? I can get on very 5cm as mentioned in the trail at about £65 with £20 off as new customer but JL is £90.

Hello Rose yes i did have a look at the 5cm silentnight but i just prefer the look of the john lewis one it looks more like its going to be a softer mattress on a mattress which is what i am trying to achieve and the fact it can be taken off and washed also 2 year guarantee but 240 great reviews did help, if you do go for the john lewis i had the double which was showing out of stock on line i just phoned john lewis they located one in a local store and are posting it out no extra charge, i am only telling you that incase you decide you might want that one and think you have to wait for stock i do not think mine will get here until Tue or Wed but i will let you know what i think of it when it arrives It has cost a few more pounds but i really am thinking it will be worth it.

Thanks very much, will pop in JL today and have a look at it. I am concerned if it is too warm.
