Hi

My desktop computer seriously needs more memory, but I need to know which one to go for in terms of compatability with the rest of my computer. Here is what I have currently (memory wise)

Go to the Crucial site and use there scanning program to let you know what you want, you can then either buy what they suggest as they guarantee it will work with your system, or check what they suggest and look for the same elsewhere!

This means you have two free slots for new memory modules, each max 1gb. It also means that you can upgrade to a max 3GB memory without disposing your current memory. You can get 4GB max but you have to get rid off the existing 512MB modules currently on your system.

The key compatibility factor lies on this info: DDR-SDRAM PC-3200 (200 MHz) - [DDR-400].

As long as you buy memory modules with this spec it will go Ok with you computer. (Off course it goes without saying that you can only buy memory modules that are 1 gb max each and 240-pin standard Desktop PC RAM)

Dont worry about mixing brands as your compie already has two different brands (Infineon and Nanya).

Play.com, ebuyer and ebay usuelly have good price for memory modules.

But if you're in doubt you can always have professional advice for extra costs

Are you running XP or Vista? With Vista you would see the benefit of another 2GB (2 x 1GB), but if it's XP then I would only put a max of another 1GB unless you're running high spec games or doing lots of video editing which can be RAM intensive. Also have a look at your PC manufacturer's website and see what RAM they recommend as an upgrade option if they do that.

It looks like you have dual-channel RAM sockets, these are usually denoted A1, A2, B1, B2. Basically it means that you can increase the 'bandwidth' of the RAM by putting the modules in sockets in matching pairs where it improves your performance over non-matching pairs. If you're not that bothered then you don't need to bother with it. Nuabdi is right in that what you really need to look for is PC-3200 (DDR 400) modules, do not confuse these with DDR2 modules as they are not compatible. I'd avoid Ebay unless it's a verified seller and they say the RAM is either brand new or tested working. I've found Kingston value RAM to be pretty good and usually keenly priced, they can also be bought in matching pairs quite easily too. It's worth getting a named brand rather than Ebuyer value RAM as it can be a bit hit and miss whether it works in particular systems and motherboards.

but if you're willing to pay extra for Crucial brand then i wont say anything :)

You're right, it is! The thing is you have Infineon RAM already in there then I think one of the cheaper ones like Kingston would be fine for you. Also in terms of size, if you're running XP and not doing lots of RAM-intensive operations then there's no real need for a total of 3GB RAM, If you want to preserve dual-channel memory use then get a pair of 512MB modules and put them in the remaining slots. If you're going to go to Vista on that machine then maybe the 2 x 1GB option would be best, but only if going with Vista to be honest.

Another option could be buying 2 x 1GB modules and then selling your current RAM to cover some of the cost, that way you would leave two slots open for future RAM upgrades if you decide to run Vista in the future.

Have a think about what suits you best in terms of what you use the PC for and might do in the future.

yeaah thats right...

if youre thinking to move to Vista OR on XP BUT a heavy gamer / do video editing alot, then 2 or 3 gb would be necessary [in this case you might as well upgrade your comp to dual core processor :)]

if youre on XP and just do surfing + office, 1 gigabyte would suffice, really. Your comp goes slow may be rooted in other things: full and fragmented disk, registry mess up, virus/spyware perhaps...

As far as my experience with it, Kingston is a good middle-range brand.
As I said earlier I use 2 x 1gb Kingston ValueRam @£13.99 each!
It has no problem so far on my vista comp. They provide lifetime warranty as well

Just make sure the number of pin (184) is right :))

ooops sorry for not mentioning ...
that one is for laptop and it is DDR2 SDRAM 533Mhz PC 4200 (200 pin) so it wont fit your machine

I did a little search and it seems your price is just right for a DDR-SDRAM!
It seems DDR-SDRAM is more expensive than DDR2-SDRAM which is newer technology!!!

I wonder if it is because noone produces DDR-SDRAM anymore? hmmm ...

just installed My 1GB of Ram, but I dont really notice any difference in terms of speed etc, especially using Photoshop
