Hard to describe, but something like this.

Just got a new car, and as I was used to the CD changer from my old one, it kinda sucks just having the one CD now - I was tempted by an iTrip but didn't fancy taking my iPod everywhere so this seems pretty much ideal.

I'm just wondering if there are any 'mini' ones around? Ideally one so small I can stick it in the compartment with the lighter and just leave it there, hidden away and use the remote.

One with a cable to charge it would work too :)

Cheers

Quite a few more on the site. Prices include shipping from Hong Kong.

They look great thank you, I'm very tempted to get one and plug it in as and when I need to use one, but I was wondering if there's something that's *really* small (small enough to close the compartment, like, sticks out by around 50mm) or one that'll have a cable so I can put it next to the lighter/charger bit?

Quick bump please, anything about?

I tried one of these when I was in exactly the same situation as you, but found the sound quality to be seriously lacking (I bought a cheap one from DealXtreme) Now I'm not saying it will be the same for you, but I decided to just get a new head unit for my car instead, one that has a usb slot which I simply plug in a memory stick. The sound quality is infinitely better, and also better than the Ford stereo I removed. I might not be as expensive as you think, as you can probably sell the factory fit stereo for a half decent amount on Ebay. By all means try the fm transmitter, it may be fine for you, and they only cost a few quid, but if you want good sound quality then you'll end up wanting a new head unit like I did.

Cheers Mike, the unit I've got at the moment goes for around £120, so I should be able to get a decent unit that'll play MP3s for that :)

Not sure why stereos that accept DVDs or SD cards are so rare though? Can find heaps of ones that accept MP3 CDs, but not MP3 DVDs or MP3s on an SD card, sigh!

You're right, there aren't that many. I went for a Sony one with a usb slot, and then bought the shortest usb stick I could find. Works fine for me, but if you really want sd card compatibility then you may find it a bit more of a struggle. If you do decide to get a new head unit, then you may need to buy a fascia adapter and iso cable adapter aswell. Ebay is the best place to look, I got the lot for about £15.

Maybe one with a USB slot is the best option then, cheers Mike :)

Just curious, what's the ISO cable adapter? I assume the fascia adapter is the thing that... well, my current unit is a lot bigger than regular, so I assume it just lets a regular size unit fit into the slot? :D

(how's that for a good way of describing it)

That's exactly what the fascia adapter is, the iso adapter is needed because your new head uni will use the iso standard connector - afaik all new head units do. However your current car probably has a custom Ford/Vauxhall/Volkswagon or whatever connector. The iso adapter cable simply allows the 2 to be connected together. You may be lucky and not need one!

Ah that's ace, cheers Mike! My unit is VW so yeah, I'd need the ISO connector :)

You may not necessarily need an iso adapter for your car, I was simply putting down some car brands at random! There are plenty of shops whis sell them so you should be able to check for your model/year. But like I said, ebay should be the cheapest option.

Ebay item 160250209054 is the sort of thing I got for my Mondeo.

I've got an FM transmitter for an ipod if you're interested? Self powered so requires no batteries or charger!
