Modifying Audio CD car sound system to MP3/WMA or external MP3 player compatible system

My friend's Ford car audio system is 6CD changer system which and is always idle as due to maintenance of audio cd's (with 8 songs is not worth the purpose) !!
Need few suggestions to change this normal CD audio system with a more flexible option .. like iPod ready system or atleast an MP3 compatible system
Few challenges are
1. Its Ford inbuilt model - How to change the player? Can it be done ourselves?
2. Steering controls - In case if we change the player the steering control wud go useless. (although we need a compromise :)
3. Tried Using FM transmitter; but low quality sound

I came to know few attachments available to the backend of the player to make it external player compatible. Did anyone try that out?

Just thought of getting ideas from this community, as many of us would have gone through this situation.

Easiest would be to get the wiring diagram for the cd changer input and make yourself a line in wire with a 3.5mm jack plug on
