Hi all,

Its time to update my aging desktop and wondered if anyone knew of a motherboard and processor (is a quad core possible) for around £100....

I suppose I could stretch to £120 but I dont really want too.....!

Thanks in advance!

PC Pro magazine did a huge CPU review in March 2010.

They said the AMD II X3 435 was a good deal at around £51.

The nearest performing Intel CPU costs around twice that.

That leaves you £50 for a motherboard.

Mind you, you may need to upgrade your memory as well.

Then you will definately need to upgrade your memory as that motherboard takes DDR3 memory and you probably have DDR2 (or maybe older)

Thanks, so thats the best I can get for £50...? Do newer motherboards need more power? Please tell me I won't have to upgrade my 350w power supply also? (Its running a 4670 graphics card by the way)

I've changed ram, drives, hard disks, etc before, but never attached a processor....is it much more difficult? Also will my current fan fit on my new processor?

yes, you have DDR, so you have to change memory anyway

No ,newer motherboards do not need more power so if the 350W is a decent quality PSU you will be fine.

Not difficult really and certainly you can do it... but I would advise you to ask somebody for help if you have not done it before .The box cpu comes with fan, the old one will probably not fit te new socket.

That could be an alternative for you :

That deal comes with the Celeron E3200.

In the PC Pro CPU megatest that was the slowest CPU in the test.

yes, that's why I suggested it only as an alternative. The performance still will be ok since this is wolfdale chip with 1mb cache, and the £105 includes 2Gb ram

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/176042 -£54.42 delivered that is the 425 model, is there much difference between this and the 435 that guilbert53 quoted me?

So boxed cpu's come with a fan, but I remember something about a gel or a paste, is that to stick the fan to the cpu and will I have to get this also?

And so also I'll have to look for DDR3 memory.. looking at that MSI motherboard, should I get 1333 memory, and maybe 2 x 2gb and keep 2 slots free for future upgrades?

Again, thanks to you guilbert53 and 7777777 for your advice on this.....

In PC Pro magazine the AMD 435 got a score of 1.54 and the AMD 425 got a score of 1.48 so slighly slower but not much in it.

To be honest I am not totally sure how much difference you will notice between these scores.

The slowest CPU they tested (Celeron 3200) got a score of 1.15 and the fastest (Intel i7 975) got a score of 2.19 (but that costs over £600).

The AMD 435 got the best score/price result for an AMD, but the 425 is not much below it.

I have built 2 PCs in the last year (both Intel Pentium Dual Core).

Both came with CPU and fan in the box, and the instructions said I did not need paste. No paste came in the box.

I did not fit any paste and never had a problem. Not sure if AMD are the same.

I think if you plan to overclock (so CPU gets hotter) you may need paste.

Right lads, I'm going for :

MSI 770-C45 AMD 770 AM3 DDR3 Support 8 channel Blu-ray Audio GB LAN ATX Motherboard 165438 34 in stock £49.08 £41.77 £49.08 £41.77
Remove from cart

AMD Athlon II X3 435 2.9GHz Socket AM3 1.5MB L2 Cache Retail Box Processor 176043 25 in stock £59.99 £51.05 £59.99 £51.05

and it comes to around £110 from ebuyer......before I click buy, do you reckon this is a good price?

Now.....onto a search for RAM!
#16
Damn, memory is dearer than I thought....I expected to pick up 2 x 2gb for around £40!!!

Can get a mobo and a Pentium Dual Core 2.93ghz (based on a wolfdale core 2 duo) for under £100, about £92 as of yesterday. Mine overclocks to 3.3 easy with the stock cooler.

Think I'm happy with the mobo and processor, but do you know where to get some memory?

I really dont want to pay over £40.......

(nice avatar by the way)

Item number 280465243237 on fleabay.... 3 x 1gb for £38?
