how are you going to get the songs onto the device if you dont own a PC/laptop?

kingtreelo, was hoping to download to my phone and use the PC at work to transfer them to the mp3 player.

You can download directly to the device with both iOS and Android stores, so you don't strictly need a PC unless you want to backup or need to run recovery.

What about the iPhone 4 deal on the main page?

Get a cheap android phone and you can load games on it too.

Burger Nips... LOL.

Not sure if this is an option or not, but when my kids were at that age, I just got them a cheap android phone (Motorola Moto E)... If they're into Mp3's now it'll be YouTube next year... A cheap mobile with WiFi but no sim allows for future interests.

We needed the same. I know you say nothing ipoddy, but a cheap tablet would probably be best.

We got the fire 7 £49.99 in john lewis, its got a 7" IPS screen (2 years guarantee) -
You can download 100's of song and movies, she uses it all the time with headphones and its well worth the money, compared to other toy type options. I'm sure your child will prefer it and get far more use out of it.

I also have this case below, its makes tablet nearly indestructable - perfect for young kids

Thanks everyone. He's already got a Samsung tablet. He's after something smaller to listen to things in the car so he doesn't have to listen to my 'mummy music'.

Maybe just whatever is cheapest if it's likely to be lost? Am sure it's possible to get one from Argos for a tenner. Saw one in a charity shop today for a couple of quid... Doesn't matter if it's lost then, and a 4yr old won't care about the brand or anything

think a tablet is still quite handy especially when they are young, not sure how confident they are at selecting tracks themselves
tablets can be visually led so click on picture of cd etc rather than reading a track listing etc

can play music from the tabelt or maybe via bluetooth headphone etc
