Bought my two eldest teenagers a sonos play 1 each for Christmas. Ideal I thought, a nice quality speaker they can use instead of the generic suction cup Bluetooth speaker they already have. Turns out they are not quite so good unless you pay for a premium music subscription! I saw Spotify and thought great but it will only work if you pay £9.99 a month so basically wanting to know if there are any free music streams that play the kind of music teenagers listen to that work with the sonos play please? Otherwise which is the best paid for service for streaming, everyone else in the house apart from me has an iPhone so would a family Apple music sub be the best option? I'm more of a cd man myself!

Cheers

Dan

Apple music would be good, you can still control it if you don't have an apple phone, the subscription is linked to and controlled through the Sonos app.
Amazon music is okay and included if you have Prime.
I use a service called Hype Machine which is free again but it's more for remixes and obscure tunes.
I don't use Spotify but a lot of people rave about it so might be worth the subs.
Someone else maybe able to suggest a free service but most require a premium account to link to Sonos.
There are also thousands of free radio stations to choose from, easy to add to Favourites and flick between.
Welcome to the addictive world of Sonos....I have 4 now (bought a 5th but wife won't let me keep it!)

Have you got Amazon Prime?

Do you have a network drive? The sonos system can play downloaded music and uploaded CDs so not just streaming.

I tend to move my subscription about to whoever offers the best price, currently I have a google play sub as they where recently offering 4 months free. Amazon with an existing prime account will do it for free with a basic catalogue of songs, or for 7.99 a month their new unlimited service designed to compete with the other big players is probably the cheapest?

If I were you I'd use one of your kids school email addresses to sign up to UNiDAYS (even if their school/college isn't on the list you can submit it) and then sign up to Spotify premium at £5 a month. I've found Spotify to be the best service and works really well with Alexa if you wanted to go down that route at some point. Prob works equally as well with sonos. Cheers

Thanks for the replies, I currently don't subscribe to anything apart from Netflix. I don't have a network drive either unfortunately, the kids don't like my taste in music either, I tried telling them they will grow up and their music taste will improve but they won't believe me!

Can you have more than one user on Spotify premium do you know please? Sounds like a decent deal though thanks

Spotify can be installed on as many devices as you like. And up to 3,333 songs can be synced for offline listening on up to three devices at a time. However, you can only stream music on one device at a time. If you begin playback on another device, the playback on your current device will be paused.

So if your kids liked an album on Spotify they can press download and play it on multiple devices. It appears only live streaming can be done on one device.

At a time.

Ok thank you, think I'm going to have to stump up for the family sub on either Spotify or Apple music by the looks of it

If it's only for two people then two student accounts is only £10 total or as you say it's £15 for Spotify family. Anyway you've got options at least cheers.

You could split the cost of Spotify family with others... http://www.hotukdeals.com/misc/spotify-family-2-spots-available-2580079

If your phone contract is rolling or due for renewing and you're considering paying for Spotify then it might be worth getting a Vodafone Red Value Bundle contract, as they come with 24 months of free Spotify Premium.

Thanks for the help everyone, have more options than I thought I would

As a long term Sonos user I'd recommend the Spotify family package as your main stay, and then use the other free streaming services to supplement this (there are lots) . If you're using iTunes on a PC or laptop you can use this as your music library too (no need for a network drive). Also if you have music stored (mp3's) on your phone you can play this direct to Sonos.
