I've currently got a Gen8 HP MicroServer running as my MediaServer. It's noisy, and also the power usage is quite high. I've been looking at other options from just a straightforward NAS setup (Synology DS416Play or QNAP qnap ts-453a seemed to be the best options) to even just using a DAS and a fanless, micro PC running freenas or similar etc.
Whilst I am fully aware of the benefits of running a full MediaServer the time, power, noise etc. are beginning to get on my nerves. I just want a simple solution that will 'just work'. I.e. updates, not restarting the machine etc.
Ideally, I would want something reasonably future proof so something that could transcode or run 4K would be ideal. It seems some of the Synology / QNAP devices can run 4K over HDMI but not stream it, if these are 'quiet' enough to have in the lounge they could work.
Interested in what people are doing, the issue I have nowadays is time. In the past I used to enjoy tinkering with the settings etc. but unfortunately that's not really possible.
I already have the hdds so looking at a budget of up to £450. The above may or may not be possible, but lots of conflicting reports.
