Book as early as possible, and if your under 25, get a railcard for a third off the price.

where are you travelling from? Have you tried megabus/megatrain? If you're on or near to a route you can get £1 tickets depending on availability and when you book. Look at their website.

I take it your in the Sunderland area?

Megabus to London on the 11th April is £8 a seat, same price for a return seat.

I'll second the Megabus idea. It can sometimes be a 'rough' ride, but I mean come on for the price you can't complain!

Although once I caught it from Leeds to London, sat at the front at the top, and ended up getting off in London with wet trousers cause the windows leaked in the rain lol. Just bear that in mind when picking a seat ;)

try midland mainline(it has just changed its name, if you type this in it will give you the new company name) trains if you are travelling from sheffield, leicester etc they do cheap seat sales from £6 each way, just double up to get a return but you have to book as early as pos, your train arrives at st pancreas station

Don't forget that if you are travelling from Sunderland there are now direct trains to London.
The company is called GRAND CENTRAL TRAINS.
They operate flat fares - £69.00 return in Standard.
Avoid 0646 from Sunderland, and 1650 hrs service from London as they're an extra £15.00 each way.

National Express from Newcastle to London is £54.75 return, if you chose a lunchtime train there, evening train back.
This is non changeable.

***But there is a new direct train from Sunderland to London, by Grand Central Trains. Their fare is £69.00 return which is changable. Just avoid first train from Sunderland, and 4.50pm from London as these are very busy so carry a supplement.
