I recently bought a Samsung GX-1L for £299, it's a digital SLR and on another planet compared to a compact. I would go for a Digital SLR in your budget range, if you spend 350-400 you could get something like a canon 400D or a nice Nikon.

(Amazon are selling the GX-1L for £569.99 but you can pick it up cheaper)

I personally wouldnt spend £300 on a compact.

If you did want to go for a compact you could look at the samsung D103 for around £140

pretty much, yes.

The main differences are the lenses and the CCD. The lense you will get with the average DSLR will be significantly better than one you would get with a compact, not only that but you can change lenses for different types of photography, this is probably the main advantage.

The CCD is bigger on a DSLR (up to 4x) which makes the raw mega-pixel count matter less, as you get less interferance so you can get bigger prints despite of the number of mega pixels.

Futhermore DSLR's look good, you can swan around looking smug at all the people with their tiny compacts. Well... until you get mugged.

Joking aside, if you want to get a £300 camera get an SLR, if you want to get a compact then spend less.

Personally I don't think you can beat the Fuji SLR wanabees like the S5600, S6500 or even the S9600.

Have a look here http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=sr_nr_p_4_4/202-0296659-7682224?ie=UTF8&rh=n%3A560834%2Cn%3A560836%2Cp%5F4%3AFuji&page=1 for reference rather than best price and then check on Google for camera reviews and price.

Here's a pretty decent review site:

if all you want is hoiliday and family shots this should serve the purpose...it has excellent reviews...check this link http://www.cameras.co.uk/camera-reviews/canon-ixus-65.cfm

Amazon may not be cheapest so ask on here if you decide to buy as someone may know where it is cheaper

As I said in another recent post I have just bought the Ixus 65 and it is a superb camera for the price imho takes superb shots in pretty much any light on auto mode which is really easy, I spent ages looking at reviews and ended up a tos up between the panasonic dmc-fx01 and the ixus 65 so I went to jessups just to try them but thought the canon had the edge and also the 3" lcd is excellent.

If it helps you can see what one of the Fuji S range cameras can do in the hands of an absolute amateur. (me !)

I noticed you want this for taking pics of the children. I have just bought a new digital compact for the same reason, shutter lag is really important for catching fast moving children. I bought a Sony DSC T9 for this reason, my old camera was just too slow. This switches on quick and will take a picture quickly. If there is shutter lag you will never catch your kids at the right moment, unless they stay still!

Here is a list of shutter lag comparison times from cameras.co.uk

http://www.cameras.co.uk/html/shutter-lag-comparisons.cfm?sort=ShutterLag

This site is pretty good for reviews and also pointing you in the right direction for the cheapest deals.

If you are serious about photography then you should get a DSLR. However if this is a minimal fuss, quick point and shoot camera that fits in your pocket go for a compact digital. Make sure it has image stabilisation as well, as the little cameras are hard to hold steady.

You should be able to get a superb compact digital for £200 -£250. I like the Sonys for build quality, and the low shutter lag, but the Canon Ixuses review well too.

See the review list here.

Hope this helps.:)

Thanks everyone for the web pages for reviews, I went for the Kodak v610 from pc world which was only £150. The 10x optical zoom did it for me. Cheers
