Need a New PC and whenever there a GOOD deal I miss out!

What it is I need a new machine which is Good value for money, run programs at the same time e.g MS Office, IE etc and play the occassional game or watch a DVD.

I have looked at Dell but am waiting for the expertise advise by the user "Mike T" who posts Brilliant Dell Deals...

I was also thinkg of buying an iMAC, the refurb ones on the Apple site are pretty good value for money, I think!

My advice is to await MikeT's Thursday Dell offerings and go from there....it may be worth waiting for PCs with vista installed...due for launch at the end of the month so expect PCs after then will have vista...also there may well be sales of PCs with XP loaded as most buyers will want vista.
#2
i dont think you'll get a very good PC with vista on it for £250

Edit: Sorry I think my eyesight is failing me. Just realised you said £520. I shall now walk away slowly and sit in the corner.

Try this one from ebuyer at £329.97 with free upgrade to Vista Home Premium Edition (£8 p&p) http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=24531917248&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=116052

Features

AMD Athlon 3800+ Dual Core AM2

1GB Memory

160GB Hard Drive SATA

DVD±RW (+R double layer)

NVIDIA GeForce 6100

Sound card - 7.1 channel surround

Keyboard,Mouse

Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition
Doesn't have a monitor but you have £190 of your budget left for a monitor of your choice.

Also the graphics are onboard but there is a PCI-E expansion slot should you wish to have a better GFX card.

Currychops: Ah the vista debate continues! I'm not anti new microsoft OS - nothing against Microsoft at all, I just think the "ironing out" should be left to people willing to spend more time & brainpower, not the casual user. I used to be in the former category, now time contraints have moved me to the latter. Also it's Wills not Willis ;-)

Cheaper in Comet at just £299, http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=355232
#8
and don't forget 3.5% quidco if you purchase from Comet.
#9
not a bad deal then

To the OP.

Seeing as you still have £220 left from your budget do you require a monitor to go with this package?

If you do then may I suggest adding another gig of DDRII ram alongside the monitor. This should take you to about £210 or so.

Add this monitor with this ram, use eBuyer for the purchase and buy at the same time so you get free delivery on these:

hmm 2GB ram may be a bit excessive for office, internet, casual games & DVD.

bear in mind that as it's onboard graphics, the OP may wish to purchase a PCI-E graphics card instead of the extra RAM (which I wouldn't bother with)
#12
Why would he want a graphics card when he does not use one? For the rare game that he plays onboard will be perfect.

I chose the extra ram which is needed for multi-tasking which he wants to do, it is needed for heavy office applications which he is using. It will be of more benefit when watching dvd's. The extra ram will be needed to get full use of Vista, (which he will be getting in a free upgrade).

I did think about a graphics card but then tried to weigh up the benefits and I could not find one, he may as well go out and put go faster stripes on his car at a cost of £70, as this is basically what he is doing.

hi! globe hopping trip was fantastic thank you...glad leeds is still treating u well

sorry to go off topic....

Cheers paperclip.
.right back onthread..the deal at Comet has free delivery if you select the 5-8 day delivery..also with quidco it will bring the price down to £289.50..surely paying £40 more at Ebuyer is no benefit whatsoever cos the postage charge on the other stuff will not come anywhere near that!

Also ..and I'm not sure?..is the memory in the Acer in dual channel (2 x 512)?? because if so to retain dual channel the upgrade will necessitate 2 x 1gb of new ram and having to sell the 2 x 512 sticks on ebay.
#15
I did say get the computer from Comet, but get the monitor and ram from eBuyer in one purchase so you get free shipping.

Also I would prefer 2gb over 1gb in dual channel. He can buy a 2x512mb kit if he wants to keep dual channel but would fill all 4 slots up.

Or as you said if he wants he can buy the 1 gig in one stick extra and sell the rest then buy another one gb with the money.
#16
sorry beerman1 I misread your advice about the Acer PC purchase...yes better to buy from Comet...I agree with your monitor choice.
#17
Hi I really like ebuyer but the comet deal also has vista upgrade * conditions apply.

Wow....thanks for the replies people! Sorry for the late response...been very bu

Well I was thinking that the Acer does look really good and the more RAM the better I guess.....but also you maybe aware of the Dell deal MikeT posted today? Thatsalso seems a pretty good deal which comes with a 19inch monitr, which I would sell of so I could get a nice HP widescreen monitor. Then I could buy an extra 1gb of RAM for it.

Also noticed many people dont advise to buy an IMAC??? As this was on a pretty good deal on the Apple site.

Those that have Apple mac's swear by them and would never entertain a windows based system....it's all a matter of preference and what you want from a PC.

What sort of HP monitor are you considering..cos you can get a really good 19 inch widesceen for £120 - £130...there are a few deals posted on this site.

Well when vista installed PCs hit the market they'll probably have to increse the memory..it remains to be seen how prices will fair?
#25
Latest edition of PC Pro say Aero can run on 512mb, (it mainly uses your grpahics processor more than the CPU). They admit it's not really smooth with onboard but they put in a 6600 and said it was fine.

So to be honest all this hype about it being really memory heavy is not 100% true. They say 1gb is still enough to run Vista nice and smooth as long as you have dedicated graphics.
#26
Hmmmmmmm....Thats true....well only 11 days to go...but not sure if its worth it.....well I might just go for this..doubt they will get cheaper as the vista machines will have more powerful components in them making the machine price higher...so I think the best bet is to buy now at a damn good price..with Free Vista Upgrade and then add on memory which you can get for Bargain prices from eBay then hey presto u shud have a powerful machine??
#27
Just to throw a spanner into the works have you seen this what Curry Chops showed me:

http://www.pcnextday.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?ProductCode=3362-3304

No Vista upgrade but hey for a machine of this quality I am sure you can save up and buy Vista later in the year. This will suit all your needs 100% mate. Massive hard drive, 1gb ram, good DVD burner, fairly decent graphics card for your odd games and to help run vista when you upgrade, not to mention the Core 2 Duo processor.

Oh and a 17 tft to throw into the bargain.

All for £500!!!

If you follow beerman1's advice don't forget 3% Quidco casback with pcnextday
