Need advice re car hire for a 23 year old on Gran Canaria, please!

I would be very grateful for any advice re the above. My son and his girlfriend are going to Gran Canaria in August for a week. My son (23) got his licence in March 2012 and has had a car for about sixteen months now. He wants to hire a car for the holiday, picking it up at the airport on arrival to drive to their hotel, and dropping it off back at the airport on return.

The possible problem is that my friend who has lived and worked on the island said that a lot of companies won't hire to under 25s, and those that do always require either a credit card (which must be in the driver's own name) or a five hundred euro cash deposit. Does anyone know if there is a way around this as my son does not own a credit card and doesn't really want one. He has his current account Visa Debit card which would have enough on it to cover any deposit.

All help and recommendations of car rental companies much appreciated, thank you.

I find the best place for car hire in the canaries to be Autoreisen, no fuel rip off, no insurance rip off, you pay only on collection and I think they accept debit cards but you will be to call or email them to check but as they have all inclusive insurance without excess I think it is ok with no deposit required.

They accept drivers from 23 years up but he must have held his licence for 2 years.

Also steer clear of the companies offering really cheap prices as they will sting him for everything on collection whereas Autoreisen do not. A one week hire for a Citroen C3 in August is approx £126

Good luck.

Would definitely +1 on autoreisen, cheapest by far when I went to lanzarote and no hassle at all.

Eg on return this is what happened:

Ok so you are returning your car?
Yes
Have you refilled the petrol?
Yes
Ok have a nice flight

They didn't even check the car

+1 for autoreisen but must have a cc

he should just get a cc as it improves his credit score. he only needs to use it for the car hire and they only put a deposit hold on the account.

y not add him as a named card holder on your credit card. then when he returns simply remove him..

Thanks very much everyone for all these helpful answers, I really appreciate it. I have looked carefully on the site and it says at one part that a credit card is required, but then on another part with the same information it says "credit or debit card". So I'm going to phone them and ask directly.

I agree re him getting a credit card for his credit score, though it's always a temptation to abuse it.

@ justanothercid, thanks for that suggestion - I didn't even know that was an option, I will look into it.
