I bought a second hand Xbox One S 1Tb (FIFA 17 Bundle) earlier this week.

Fired it up today and to my surprise, it had a around 8 Xbox One games and 5 Xbox 360 games preinstalled. While the majority of the games don't load ("Do you own this game or app?" message), a few of them (namely, GTAV, FIFA 17, Rayman Origins (360) and World at War (360) do).

I have never used Xbox Live before and have no purchases on this account I just made. The games that do work do so both when there is and isn't an account signed in on the Xbox. I expected these digital downloads to function similarly to my PS4 where games are tied to an account though it seems they don't.

I have a few questions:

1) Why are some of the games playable while others aren't?

2) Are Xbox games tied to accounts or consoles

3) I bought the (white) console in perfect condition excluding a broken controller for £130. Did I get a good price?

4) If I were to use the console for a few months- I bought it only to play through the Halo campaigns- what would roughly be the expected resale on it?

5) Would it be false advertising to sell the console as "bundled with 4 games" that are already on the hard drive and work without an account?

Thank you!

I don't have a current gen but I have a 360 and PS3 that are rotting away in a cupboard, based on what I recall its poss the games that don't work are freebies given with gold membership and are tied to the account.

As for resale bear in mind if the games ever need reinstalling, they can't be without the account.

1) the games that are playable are owned and the ones that aren't are just installed off the disk
2) games are tied to console
3) not sure really maybe someone else can help
4) just check on resent sales of similar consoles at the time as prices fluctuate really often

1) The ones that don't work were probably installed from a disc and so that disc is required to play, the others will be digital purchases. As to why they're there, are there any profiles left on the console from the previous owner ? if so, the purchases are likely linked to that - pretty sure the console lets you play games linked to profiles on the same console.

2) Digital purchases are linked to accounts yes

3) Yeah that's a pretty good deal for a slim - providing there are no hidden issues. Was a box included ?

4) With a functioning control you'll probably make your money back. CEX give £145 in boxed condition, £121 unboxed. You might make more if you sell private or id you trade in.

5) Yes

I think it's a very good price considering it's the 1Tb model.

1 - I'm guessing they're GwG titles (if you don't have gold currently) or are just installed from discs.

2 - They are tied to accounts but can be used on any account on the console.

3 - Yes that's a really good price.

4 - Assuming nothing in the industry drastically changes, you could probably get around the £150 mark.

5 - Yes. Never sell an account, including selling games tied to an account

they are the previous owners games like mentioned the ones that don't play will be installed of disc the others are a download.
You can set up other accounts on that Xbox and it will let you play them but if the previous owner has another Xbox and sets it to his home Xbox they will stop working.
So you can either leave it till they stop working (if they do) or delete his account and start fresh

the games that are working are digital games owned by the last owner. these still work because your console still is set as the last owner home Xbox. this means all their digital games will work even if they aren't logged on.

if that person sets a different Xbox as their home Xbox then the games will stop working permanently for you.

so no you can't sell it as having games installed as at any point they can stop working.

play them while you can

You can technically sell it with account as longs buyer is happy and understands the games may cease to work at any time. Doesnt add much value for this reason. Ive bought consoles with accounts on and played the games before starting fresh

Thank you everyone for the prompt responses!

Just one thing I'm still confused about is who the digital games belong to. I understand the "home console" concept a few of you guys have just explained.

What I don't understand is why this console still seems to work as his home console if his account is no longer on the system?

What games are still playable?
Have you created a new Microsoft/Xbox account? Signed up for Xbox live?
If the games were games for gold and already on there there you would be able to play them if you have xbox live.
Did you get the games previously with your account when they where given free.ie I got titanfall free about 2yrs ago but did not have an Xbox and forgot about it untill I got my xbox and was able to play it.

There are 4 games still playable:

- Grand Theft Auto 5
- FIFA 17
- Rayman Origins (360)
- Call of Duty: World at War (360)

I have never had an Xbox Live account before

I have never owned an Xbox 360 or Xbox One before

I made a fresh Microsoft Account this morning which is the only account on the console. This account has no Xbox Live trial nor subscription of any sort tied to it.

All 4 games are still completely playable either signed out or signed in.

Nice some decent games there but the person you bought from must still have an account on there so those games may stop working anytime

his account must still be on there
sounds like he's just deleted his profile thinking that would be enough but left his account on there.
What accounts show up in settings

Right looked a bit further into it..
The previous owner has set console as main home Xbox this will be tied to the serial of said console so would make no difference if the account is on there or not.
The games will be playable until you set it as your home console or the previous owner removes the serial of console from account,at which time you lose the games.but any digital games you buy will be available to previous owner untill you set it to your home console.
Hope this helps

This is almost correct. You could also set this console as your home console and the games will still be there. Multiple people can set the same hardware as their home console.

They will only become unplayable when the previous owner who has set this as their own console takes some action (either setting another home console or actively removing this console via his account settings/Microsoft?

The previous owner's account is definitely not on there. I checked settings and only my account is.

I've come to the conclusion that he's set it as his home console and, even though his account is no longer on the Xbox (there's no trace of it whatsoever), this will remain his home console until he activates another console in the same fashion.

Which gives me access to those games, even though my account is the only account anywhere on the Xbox, signed in or otherwise.

I think that's everything

Thanks for your help guys!

I'm rather reluctant to post the link and I wouldn't blame a mod for deleting this post but it appears if you log into one console then buy and install a digital game you can then log into another console and download and install the game again with both installations working. People appear to be getting away with this however there are reports of people having the game deleted from their accounts and even some people claiming a ban or suspension when trying to both play the same game online at the same time.

The honest or rather decent thing to do would be to either delete the games to contact whoever you bought the console from to make sure they are no longer using the account, especialy if they have your contact details.

You don't need to worry about your post as it's a feature of the Xbox ones to allow legitimate game sharing it's only really a issue when people try selling shared accounts.

I contacted the man I bought it from and he said he won't be using his account again because he's not buying another Xbox and prefers his PS4. So I guess that's not much of an issue?

Yup. You've lucked out excellently there. Enjoy!
