Don't know if it is the same problem I have sometimes. I put the computer on and the screen stays blank. On the back of the tower there is like an on off switch,
Turn the computer off, you have probably been doing this by holding in the on button the 5 seconds.
Now turn the switch on the back of the tower off and then on again and then start the computer again. See if this works. If not, sorry I don't know what else to suggest.

Good Luck:

Can't help u with a recovery disc but if u dont get one maybe this guy (Mr IT) can help with a cost effective remote repair. He charges a flat rate of £11 on a no fix no fee deal. I have no affiliation with him apart from having used him and would recommend him. (I reckon he must be the cheapest PC repair man in the UK)

Hi the above poster directed me here. Have you conidered the monitor to be the problem (try a different 1 or try the monitor on another machine) a failure like this could be hardware and reinstalling windows may not work. Recovery disks can be ordered from the Compaq website. Usualy with compaq they put their recovery software on the hard drive itself. When you turn the pc on look out for a message that says system recovery press?? its usualy F12 you have to hit but it could be different. A better way is to do a system restore, if you can. If it's XP click start>all programs>accessories>system tools> system restore. then just set it to restore to a date when it worked with no problems.

i may have some disk but would want quite a bit of money for them as they can only be made once but i would try and contact Compaq first to see what they can give you the disks for.

The following steps open a Recovery Console:
Do one of the following depending on whether you are using a CD or the recovery console on the hard drive:
If you have recovery console on the hard drive, turn on the computer and repeatedly press the F8 key after the first startup screen appears. Select Recovery Console using the arrow and Enter keys.
NOTE: If using a Recovery Tools CD, select Run Microsoft Recovery Console, and follow the onscreen instructions to open the recovery console.

If the Recovery Console option is not listed, select Return to OS Choices Menu to select Recovery Console.

hopefully you only need to press F8

got the above from
