Need help urgently to choose a vacuum cleaner! thankyou!!

My evil teenage son has just broken the vacuum cleaner *furious*. it was a pull along one, Swan brand, 2000 watt, permanent bag, etc. it was good and sturdy with strong metal poles, and it was perfect, except it was heavy to pull along.

So I need a new vacuum urgently and havent a clue what to go for. i just know that i want a pull along one rather than an upright one. Are cyclonic ones better than bag cleaners? I saw quite a lot on the Tesco Direct site in the sale, for under £60 - i wouldn't want to pay ore than that. i just dont know which to go for! I also saw this one on Amazon, which looks good too. I recently had a month trial of which? so cant check that site now, if anyone has a membership and can tell me any best buys, id be grateful.

ps. I live in a two bed flat, two rooms have carpet, two have varnished floorboards and two have vinyl flooring, so i'd like one that can cope well with all these.

THANKYOU very much to anyone who has a suggestion! Rep will be added for any helpful input!

We had a cyclonic panasonic and it was **** lasted about a year before it refused to pick up anything cost about £80. Afterwards we got a dyson which cost £150 and after 5 years is still going strong. My 2 pence worth.

Whereabouts are you? My OH has a Dyson DC07 for sale which has a retractable brush bar (which makes it suitable for all floor types) for £50.

I gave my Dyson away (cost £140) in favour of my Kenwood VC5000 (I think that's the model no.) 1400 - I bought it on Amazon for £14.99 about 3 years ago - it's lightweight, great suction, bagless, would thoroughly recommend it. Hated the clumsy, heavy Dyson. The Kenwood is the best vacuum I've ever had in terms of ease of use, suction etc. Think I saw the deal on here - it was half price. if I ever see it again, I'll buy another one in case this one conks out.

Thanks for posting, this looks nice, it's an upright though, and I need a cylinder vacuum.

hmm thankyou, this is on the list now! The only thing is, I had a hoover brand upright vacuum about 16 yrs ago when the Hoover free flights fiasco happened. I never got my flights and that damned, expensive hoover broke completely after 13 months! I wonder if the quality of them has increased again since then? They used to be such a reliable brand.

one of my sisters swears by Henry, but I found him a bit big and ... industrial? I do know he's good and sturdy though, but £89 is unfortunately out of my price range at the moment. Thanks for posting, i appreciate it!

oh thanks for that recommendation. I did have the original orange wet/dry Vax machine years ago and it worked not bad as a vacuum for about four years.

Thankyou for this helpful advice. Think i'll give the cyclonic panasonic a miss now! I don't always feel that price / brand beats reliability/longevity, as demonstrated by me having the same old cheap vcr and portable for my son, (Goodmans) while a friend went through three different ones of each in the same time for her son, all Which? recommended rather expensive best buys! It does seem though that Dyson is coming out as very reliable. Thanks again for your advice!

Thanks for that recommendation! I looked up that model and it has a reuseable dust bag, so maybe a diferent model. i do remember some years back another of my sisters had a Dyson cylinder cleaner, the first model they ever made and it weighed a ton, and really didn't suck very well. Im sure theyre much better nowadays, but if theyre still heavy... not so good. Thanks again for your input!
