Best thing to do is head off down to your local Jessops or equivalent and have a play with them all, Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus and see what you like, what feels best etc. Then come home and have a think about it. camerapricebuster.co.uk is pretty good for seeing where the deals are. With the poor exchange rate eqpt is getting more and more expensive day by day.

I started with an Olympus OM-10 in the 70s (as did virtually everyone who didn't get the Pentax K1000) then moved to Canon, stayed with that brand when autofocus arrived and then came digital.

Did months of spec research, decided that I'd probably get a Nikon D80.

Went to a load of shops and was completely taken by the Olympus E-500. Eventually bought one in a kit with the 18-180mm lens (36-360mm 35mm equivalent).

What I guess I'm saying is don't rule anything out, what the camera feels like in your hands and how easy it is to use will determine how often you actually feel like taking it out with you. If you haven't got it you can't take the picture!

So, please bear in mind alternatives such as the Olympus E-520 for £329 incl del from Bristol Cameras http://www.bristolcameras.co.uk/p-olympus-e520-digital-slr-body.htm

If you buy the body alone you can get a level of lens up from the standard kit versions. I'm thinking perhaps the 14-54mm (28-108mm 35mm equivalent) for £359 and an extra £5 delivery from the same supplier http://www.bristolcameras.co.uk/p-olympus-lens-14-54mm-f2-8-3-5-zuiko-digital.htm making a total of £693 all in.

The E520 has, of course, the original (and, some would argue, the best) dust removal system, a tilt and swivel LCD with live view and image stabilisation built into the body so it will work with any four thirds system lens.

thanks guys, going to pay a camera shop a visit i think, i was using my brothers nikon d300 in australia and thought it was amazing!!!! but thats still 1200 with no lens kit.

therefore im going to go test the nikon d90 and then ask if i can see other makes of the same price band and see if they compare.

does this seem like a reasonable price? cheapest i can find online

Good camera the D90. It's £719 with kit lens at PC World (instore). Go down and have a try.

There isn't really a huge difference between the D90 and D300 if you like that, and it's cheaper. You won't go wrong with a Nikon or Canon though...
