My friend's daughter is starting her teacher training course and wants a notebook PC that she can use for her coursework at home ie. not much moving about. She reckons that she is going to use it for MS Office apps, playing music and DVDs.

With a budget of £400, it's not going to be easy especially as my friend is paying for it and his primary criteria is reliability. He has had some bad experiences with Acer & Dell (let's not start THAT discussion...) so the shortlist is Toshiba, HP/Compaq and Samsung as Sony is probably out of the budget.

I'm going to suggest a bulk standard new 15" notebook with an Intel dual core CPU, 3Gb+, 250Gb+ and a non-Intel GPU with Windows 7. Ambitious, eh? The closest I have found is the Samsung R519 or the Toshiba L500; any other notebooks available?

I'd really appreciate it as I am struggling to find anything better.

Of all (quite a few) notebooks I (and my children) have owned I'd only recommend Toshiba and Novatech in the budget range. Hp/Compaq are flimsily made and I've never had anything from Samsung that has lasted much beyond its warranty period!

Thanks Tony, Toshiba is the preferred brand at the moment; especially as the £50 cashback offer is still on.

Dell are selling what I think would be ok its only £329 delivered and it has Dual Core 3GB and Windows 7!
I have used Dell for 10 years! Never had one issue with them.

My 18 year old daughter has had a Toshiba for a couple of years now. It's virtually indestructible. :whistling:

Thanks Tyke but he's definitely not keen on Dell...and the Compaq is a single core!

Tony, do you know which model she has?

Sorry, can't remember and she's away at uni now. But, all the Toshibas I've looked at since have seemed pretty well built.

Staples had a reduced one the other day when I was in there for about £260. It may have been just a local offer but could be worth looking if you a Staples one near you.

Thanks again, Tony.
