Go for a hybrid - ie a combination of a road bike and a commuter bike.

Something along the lines of the Ridgeback / Canondale / Specialized lower end range.

EvansCycles will do a pricematch if you can bring in an ad showing what you want. Look for a 2007 model in the clearance sections of EvansCycles.com for a cheaper option.

I'd avoid a mountain bike unless you really will use it off road, and even then your budget isn't quite up to it.

A hybrid would be a better choice if your budget is under £500, road bikes below that are generally poor quality. Proper road bikes generally tend not to take full length mudguards or panier racks very well if at all and hybrids tend to come with tyres suitable for road and cycletracks.

Ridgebacks are a good start and some of the Treks are good too, I would go for a proper hybrid with 700c wheels (not 26"), possibly even a sports hybrid if you want something closer to a road bike. http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=70709
