I've purchased my first ever NAS. it's a QNAP TS-453A.

I've not taken delivery of it yet and thought I would spend the time between now and receiving it to ask for any advice on setting it up and using it, including pointers to any online videos or tutorials.

Thanks in advance.

There are mobile apps available where you can access files from outside your network with qnap loud enabled, share links to files with anyone on the internet via the web interface . It has HDMI so you can connect to tv and run plex Kodi directly which could be handy if you don't have a smart tv or Fire tv. Type device with these apps available . Back up your cloud storage ( I back up my Dropbox and one drive account ). Not messed with the IP cameras as I don't have any . I did try vm installed unbuntu and Windows 10 worked quite well but I don't think 4gb ram is enough so i would upgrade easy to do you can max it to 16gb with 2 8gb sticks . And in sure it would run better . Other things I have done is installed a calibre package which reads my database of Ebooks so I can access them wirelessly via my e reader and download directly . Installed transmission torrent and then have the app on my phone to push torrents directly to the nas . I've explored a few things

If you're going to use VM to run Windows etc, upgrade the RAM to at least 8GB.
Download Qremote for your smartphone - it's much better than using the supplied (physical) remote.

I haven't given much effort to set up my QNAP NAS as I haven't had a lot of time. Looking to set up a git/SVN server on it.

I was thinking of using it as a media server for my films and music. It would be good to be able to share these over the internet so that I can play them while away from home.

Also quite like the idea of connecting an IP camera or two.
