Food Evening all,

Im looking into getting a new sim-only contract with a provider after BT's awful customer service and miscommunications have infuriated me for the last time.

Ive been researching Plusnet mobile and their prices seem to be competitive, with my aim not to pay more than £8 per month for a mobile phone contract.
Specifically i was looking at this https://www.plus.net/mobile/plans/sim-only/ where i would pay

- £7.50 per month (rolling 30 day) and get:
- 2GB data
- 1000mins
- unlimited texts

Whereas for my current BT contract which is now rolling (having completed 12 months in December) i pay

- £8 per month and get:
- 2gb data
- 250mins
- unlimited texts

The plusnet deal looks appealing because its better than my existing contract, has a UK based customer service, i save money and its a rolling contract so should a better sim-only deal come around in the next few months around the £8 mark i can always end my contract with plusnet and take up the new offer.

I was just hoping to get some thoughts from HUKDers experience in using plusnet mobile and whether their coverage is any good at all.

Alternatively if there is another competitive sim only deal out there, please would you be so kind as to let me know.

Many thanks in advance!

Plusnet are owned by BT and in my experience their customer service now rivals BT whether they are based in this country or not! Long waits on the phone and general incompetence amongst the issues I had with Plusnet.

Having said the above I don't think any of the other providers are much better!

But plusnet's customer service is in the UK and not outsourced to BT? One of BT's own advisors put the phone down on me after 10mins of jumping through hoops because i asked for another advisor who could speak coherent english :/

Do Plusnet not have a live chat service or do you need to ring up their customer service number?

At my current price point, i cant see anything out there that is much better, 2gb Data and unlimited texts are the crucial parts of the package for me

It is based in the uk but i still spent 40 mins waiting for them to answer my call when I had a problem.

I'm not saying don't go with them I'm just saying don't assume the cust service will be amazing.

Pretty sure they both run off EE so coverage shouldn't be an issue if you were fine on BT mobile. In reality youre only going to be in touch with customer service very rarely if ever at all, so I wouldn't let that put you off PlusNet (although understand your frustrations with BT).

Been with Vodafone for years. Just moved to plusnet and for £7.50 a month who cares what the customer service is like. It's by far the cheapest and I've had not problems so far. Vodafone customer service isn't worth the extra cost they charge.

I just moved from id mobile to plusnet.
Just taking time to port my number over.
I'd mobile was rubbish. Im convinced they was adding charges.
The people operator are good

I've had Plusnet (and Life their predecessor) for 6 months for my son. Good service and never had issues within speed of data. The useage cap is good too for stopping my son from going over his allowances, I use live chat if I ever have to contact them and it has been great when used. Did it last week to change tariff and it was sorted quickly and without fuss. She even put £5 credit on my account as she said I was her 100th customer of the day.

Thanks for the comments all. I've decided to take the plunge and go with plusnet @£7.50pm, the price for the package is a little too good to turn down at this moment in time.

How long have you been waiting to port your number? I will be doing that as well, so would be good to know roughly how long it takes.

They said it takes 2 days. This is day 2 so hopefully later today

We have a couple of the plusnet sims in my house and so far they have been fine, we changed the usage outside of the inclusive minutes etc and it wasn't an issue getting through to them. Porting numbers was fine, it took about 4 days, we lost 4g and could only get 3G for a day why it went through but it wasn't an issue really. We figured that seeing as its only a 30 day contract that if the service was rubbish we could just cancel. I also have BT sim for my work phone, I've kept that as free access to BT wifi hot spots is very handy.

PN Mobile is rapidly gaining a reputation for incompetence, and they have only been operating under the name for a couple of months.

If you want a reliable service, take your money elsewhere.

let me give you my experience, we took 3 sims to life plusnets name until a few months ago, about 4 months ago, service was amazing, got straight through any time you needed to talk to anyone on webchat and couple of times we had to call them no wait time. I was in the US with work and hadn't realised you needed to activate your sim to use abroad, emailed them that night by the following morning it was all set up. Did have issues posting 2 numbers across, one took 5 days in the end but they gave a free month credit for this. Unfortunately the 3G signal was terrible so we left, on leaving the retention department were awful, not friendly what so ever.

Now fast forward a few months and they now have 4G so I order a sim, it was delayed probably due to the Christmas post so I go on webchat to cancel, 45 minutes later got to speak to someone, then the webchat crashes so I try again the following day, 40 minutes this time to be told they need me to get the sim first to cancel but come back to webchat and they will sort it out once it arrives. 5 days later the sim arrives, back on webchat 30 minutes, then told they cant do it on webchat and needed to call. So call and 45 minutes later speaks to someone who then tells me she needs to put me through to another team, I plead with her not to as its taken so long, no choice though, another 45 minutes later and finally get through to cancel. Guy then says he will credit my account with the cost of the month with my current supplier so I could start with them, I made my excuses and got him to cancel. A month later and I am still put off by it.

All been ported over okay

BEWARE: I've only just switched but had one major issue with them; when you place the order they take your PAC code before posting the sim and without checking if your phone is unlocked. Porting is set in place and old number will go off, if phone is locked and could take 10 working days to unlock it you are probably paying the old contract plus the new one while having no service. Likewise if sim doesn't arrive on time. They didn't seem to get this was an issue.

Aside from that it's very good value and now I'm unlocked seems to be working fine but it's early days. I like the UK call centres but they can be slow to answer and they didn't really give the the best advice re the porting process - they advised just wait until phone goes off before putting in new sim, fortunately I tried it when it arrived or I'd have lost a day while it got unlocked.
