I'm off to NY for Christmas, and am having trouble finding a decent but reasonably priced hotel.

Are there any good discount sites anyone knows of? Or price comparison site for hotels ? Mum wants to stay in the Waldorf but it's stretching my pocket :)

As we as that I wondered if there was any good shows on around Christmas someone might recommend?

Thanks

From my limited experience I believe the Waldorf to be a bit out of the way of most of the action in New York. When I was there we stayed in the Sheraton Manhattan which is about 2 mins walk to Times Square and less than 10 mins to central park and 5th avenue. If your looking to take in a show then the closer to Times Square you can get probably the better.

Free tour from these people if you book it in advance. Well recommended

This is very relevant to what I was just about to post so thanks to all, now all I need is the best place to get a decent priced flight for 2 Manchester - New York (preferably JFK) for the weekend either before or after 23rd Jan 08.

that time of year is v expensive for hotels im afraid. Have you considered staying somewhere with shared bathrooms? this was reduce the cost. Have you heard of priceline? its where you bid for hotels (as far as i remember!) Its mentioned on the NYC forum on trip advisor a lot.

Here are links to my last 2 trip reports to NYC, it might give you a few ideas of things to do...

Also shows, if you have a look at www.broadwaybox.com and playbill.com they have discount codes listed for certain shows. We seen phantom for $50 each, best seats too last year. Watch out for scalpers though!

Well I've got around £900 in mind for a weekend break for me and the missus for her 23rd Birthday. lastminute.com has thrown up a couple of places flights and a room at thirty thirty which looks nice (i'll have to look into it) anything less is a bonus, nedd to be in a nicely situated though.

try http://www.tripadvisor.com/ for hotel reviews and/or possible hotel prices

:)

I stayed at the Hotel Metro, literally a stone's throw from Macy's and was very reasonable. Booked that plus flights, alas was VERY last minute and had to fly from London :-( but that was about £1200 all in for two, in what is now the phones4u shop in Midd lol

I'd recommend that anyways cos it's location but you'll find so many ideally placed hotels, just depends where you wanna go

As long as the hotel is near a subway station you cant really go wrong. The subway is so easy to use. We used it a lot last year. Got the 7 day unlimited pass for $24 - bargain! we definately got our use of it.

Just check out the hotel reviews on trip advisor, holiday truths etc.

Thanks for the advice, rep added..... dont think i'd manage a 2 hour train ride down to london before a flight to NY.

(I try to avoid venturing into Mid centre )

Try hotwire as well for hotels often have very good deals. Also travelzoo sometimes have offers. Hotels there are loads something a bit different and not so expensive google the pod hotel, can get a double room with private bath for not loads of money.

Thanks Jaime, very interesting reads...although the flight part has scared me.

I'm a nervous fligher, i've avoided going to NY year after year but got a call from Dad to say he had 2 free flights...so had to take up the opportunity.

The time table seems to make it that the flight is at least 7 hours? :o :(

I stayed there as well last year, good location and the roof terrace is superb, next block from Empire State building as well.

Dont be scared! I flew on my own last month for the first time and I was fine. We are off to cyprus in 3 weeks 5 hr flight and I cant wait :giggle: just love getting away. Get some diazepam of the doc and you will be grand;-)

I'm fine on short haul flights, infact i get more nervous in the queues than on the plane with short haul.

Thanks, I'll just have to repeat "how long now" every 10 min lol

And to think i used to fly to florida 3/4 times a year when i was a teen lol

you've tried hoteldiscount.com? / another tip, once you've got the place you want at the price you want, then google it to see who else offers it - you can often get cheaper that way. I also recommend tripadvisor.com for reviews of hotels. It's perhaps the biggest such site so you'll get lots of reviews from real customers. They also allow you to search for availability and check a whole host of hotel booking agenices at once for you (e.g. expedia). Enjoy your trip.

First post - Hey. I stayed at the Wolcott hotel (above), very nice place, comfortable rooms. Amazing close to the Empire State building for the price.

Also stayed at the Comfort Inn Chelsea over last New Years, again, nice hotel. Somehow managed to get a discount on that through a friend.

I dont know the Wolcott but thats an excellent area to stay in.
