Nikon D40

I'm looking around for the best price on a Nikon D40 SLR camera.

It seems to sell at most places for around £300, and the best price i've managed to find it for (thanks to a 5% off and free delivery code from HUKD) is £284.05 from currys - which also gives me 5% quidco.
Does anyone know of anywhere selling it for a better price? If it helps, i'm based in Somerset but i think i'm probably going to be buying online.

Here's a link to the camera on currys, and the discount codes i've used for anyone who's interested.

As for the price I think you are about as low as you'll find it there.

Yeah i think you might be right. I've done some more digging but still haven't managed to beat that price.
I hope what you say is true, this will be my first SLR camera and i'm travelling around Africa for a month with it, so let's hope it gives me some great pictures :)

Don't know if it is worth the time but there were some Nikon D40 cameras on EBay from a pretty respected seller that were £265 plus £13 Insured P&P. Not much difference, I know, but cheaper nonetheless.

I can't decide between this and the Canon400D..
Why did you go for the Nikon?

Just did some research really, most places on the net can barely seem to choose between them but i've used nikons in the past and found them really nice. A friend of mine has a D40 too so i have at least seen what it's capable of.
I'm sure whichever one you go for, you'll be happy - the canon gets rave reviews everywhere.

My OH was torn between going for a Canon or a Nikon also.

Both very good camera makes, both get great reviews and I am sure you will be happy with either.
What I would suggest is going into a shop like Jessops etc and getting hands on with both of them.It can be the smallest of things that tips the balance, how it feels in the hand, navigation etc.

He also chose a Nikon in the end but that is not to say it wasn't a close call.

I bought a Nikon D40 for £279.99 through John Lewis (delivered 2 days later). 2Gb SanDisk Extreme III SD for £14.99 from play.com and a nice bag from dixons for £9.99. This is a present for my dad and is exactly the same kit that i bought 6 months ago, the camera is fantastic and well worth the money.

That's a laughably good deal - some poor lemons still pay that sort of money for [email protected] P&S cameras because the knowledgable man in Dixons tells them to :giggle:

I THINK Jessops online have an offer........

A couple of things - the Nikon D40 is only 6MP (i say only...) whereas the Canon 400d is 10MP. It's the Nikon D40X that is 10MP and the prices compare quite well. Ultimately it will come down to personal choice as the 400d and D40x are very evenly matched and the D40 is a huge amount of camera for the money.

Personally, I went with the Canon because I had used Canon kit before and like the way it feels and operates and the sensor cleaning is very useful and hopefully aftermarket kit should be plentiful and reasonably cheap.

DSLR's do not include any internal memory, so you will need a memory card to take any pictures.
Play.com are very reasonable for these and you get quidco and free delivery, but make sure you get high speed cards as you will limit the camera by opting for cheap cards. The Sandisk Extreme III cards are generally accepted as about the best performing cards for the money, a 2gb sd card is only £15 so not too expensive either.

From dpreview.com (cracking website) http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/NikonD40/

The Nikon D40 is an all new affordable, compact, point-and-shoot digital SLR from Nikon, it follows on from the D50 but at a significantly lower price point and with a subtly different feature set. The biggest news however is probably fact that Nikon resisted the temptation to keep chasing megapixels (hooray for that) and instead appear to have concentrated on what makes a good camera, a decent viewfinder, short shutter lag, very short viewfinder blackout. They've trimmed some of the 'less important features' (you can't change the exposure steps for example) but have squeezed a range of new features such as custom Auto ISO which we welcomed with the D80.

Don't be put off by only 6MP .... :santa:

Anyone know the cheapest deal for the D40 with kit lens now?
Seems to be Dixons at £285 using discount code JAN10 ?
