I,m looking for an unused CD key for Half life 2. I bought the game recently off ebay but the game wont run as its locked with the previous owners CD key. Ive tryed emailing STEAM but they have said that i have to pay £29 for a new key.

yeah what do u mean by its locked to the other person?

half life 2 is a 1 player game so u should be able to install the key multiple times and use it cause i think they only check keys if u go online

i have half life 2 but i never play it, only bought it for counter strike source

It says that you have to register the CD key online, however the previous owner has registered. So i have to buy another key.
Its an original copy also.
The game is run online, so every time i try to start it up, it says that im not registered with STEAM.

Ive also tryed switching my broadband off to see if that works but to no avail.

If it was me I'd be asking for my money back from the ebay trader.

I've emailed the ebayer last night to see what he can do, but still havent heard anything back, and STEAM are taking there time replying. Not a happy fat man dancing at the moment.

Steam is an absolute nightmare and the only legit way to get Half-Life 2 running is to have a Steam account. You cannot even play the game if you don't have an internet connection to validate it.

The reason you don't see preowned copies of the game in shops is precisely because of the individual account issue.

Valve will 100% deny you a new account, In fact it's illegal for the ebay seller to even provide you with the game. The actual 'ridiculous' procedure is that the owner must return the game to Valve who will reset the account in order to sell it to you.

I had massive problems as I forgot my account details after a long absence from the game - Foolishly I also entered something completely abstract as my password reminder. Valve provided no assistance whatsoever and I was fuming.

Inevitably I had to bite the bullet and purchase a brand new copy which was certainly a bitter experience as I reluctantly handed the cashier my precious earnings :)

Hilariously though I had a vision and suddenly managed to access my old account after all that hassle.

Your only hope is that the seller provide you with their log in details unfortunately. I would give you my spare key but technically that's worth the full value of the game.

It's £14.99 on Xbox and a 2nd hand xbox is £40.

I've stopped playing games on PC's, too much hassle!

Cheers for the effort everybody. Looks like its got to go back on ebay to try and recoup some money and i'll have to buy a new copy.

FPS games need a mouse and keyboard though :p.

OP - unfortunately buying a new game is all you can do. Any game which needs a cd-key to be bought online needs to be bought new, as otherwise you have no idea if the other person has already registered that key. Saying that, I have a copy of HalfLife here that a friend bought new and couldn't use because the key was already registered!

That should definately work and when online change the password.

If you want to play offline go to gamecopyworld.com and look for a no-cd patch:thumbsup:

If you want to risk installing Viruses, Trojans and Downloaders on your PC go to GameCopyWorld. Otherwise stay legit. A lot of cracks have viral code buried in them, so using them is always risky.

I think that's as far as this conversation should go on this dubious topic :)
