Went to get our son his first lego set from Toys-R-Us the other day, and the cheapest box was 50 quid!!!

Absolutely mental. Does anyone know if there are any Lego special offers on at the moment?

No. Second hand is fine. As long as the previous owners didn't eat it and poo it out again!

Have you seen this box? I know it's still £24.49 but it looks like a good starter set and the reviews don't look bad.

My son is just getting into Lego so at first we got him the little sets ie. car, plane, motorbike etc from Tesco as they are only about £3. Great to start off with.

I bought a Star Wars set off ebay for my son for christmas, they said it had only been made once and was complete, however after my son made it he found one of the main pieces was missing along with the little man, so he was really disapointed, so I ended up having to buy another set so he could get the missing piece and the man, so cost me more than buying it new. As id put it away for christmas it was too late to ask for a refund as I collect things months in advance, but if I buy any more to put away I'll check it first to make sure its all there, it seems a lot of the little characters out of the sets, especially Star Wars ones can be sold for £5-£10 or more on their own, so people sell them on their own and then sell the sets without the men, some say they are not included but some "forget" to mention it.

In the good old days you just had a box of random bricks and used your imagination to build anything under the sun. Now it just seems to involve buying the latest themed kit, following a plan to build it once, then forgetting it.

We have a box of random bricks! The kids love it

We also have had boxes of themed sets - they are now scattered amongst the random bits ;-)

Make sure you also do a local search, then arrange to pick it up. You could potentially save £10 - £15
