Optician Deals - find the best!

sw02jcosw02jco

Like many of you, I am really fed up of having to pay over £100 for frames from an optician that costs them around £2-3 to buy in (anything up to and beyond a whopping 5000% markup!!!). Apart from the D&A ones (used the eye test voucher, but glasses way too expensive), does anyone know where the best place to get glasses from is and what sort of deals there are at the moment please?

Many many thanks to anyone who tries more successfully than me to find out!

Have you looked on www.glassesdirect.co.uk. They are pretty reasonable?
Asda opticians are pretty good. I always buy my contact lenses from them.

As an optometrist, I have been batting on this "specs are a rip off" wicket for a while now....(16 or so years i believe) and when the internet comes along I say ... "yippee cheap specs" - at last I can charge what I really want to for my professional time and not load the cost of specs up to compensate.

The downside is that there are fewer eye examinations done and the less that sight threatening disease is detected. Did you know one can lose 70% (yes seventy percent) of your visual field and not notice it? - an amazing thought really.

Still.., you pays your money... after all it;s your eyesight and (thankfully) not mine!

The phrase "false economy" comes to mind, but when you mix healthcare and retail...witness the appalling state of the NHs and....you get what you pay for,

Thank you so much. Tried the www.goggles4u.com link and got a pair of glasses with lenses for £13.01 delivered. Ideal for driving. If using this, order one at a time and then you get 15% of subsequent orders. Also found the code dv302 on an Australian site that gives 5% off ifrst order.

yes, i decided i wanted some new glasses - so i went to an independent optician, explained that i wanted an eye test and needed a checkup - but i wasn't prepared to purchase glasses from them. i was very up front about it all - explained that the glasses i was intending to purchase (from goggles4u) were so cheap if they failed me it wouldn't be a loss and i wanted to try them out.

they spent about 10 minutes trying to persuade me the downsides from their point of view (lack of after care etc...), but after explaining my position on the matter were fine about it. after my eye test they asked me to bring in the glasses when i received them so they could see what kind of quality i was getting.

i went in on saturday with the 3 pairs i purchased. overall they were very impressed, pointed out some slight defects and ran them through their scanners to check the accuracy of the glasses vs the prescription i was issued. in the end they were very good about it (and admitted they didn't believe i would come back to show them the new glasses).

i've since booked an appointment with them to try contact lenses.

so to summarise. yes glasses themselves are overvalued - but as optombenno points out - the opticians real worth is under priced. i recommend being up front about it, avoiding the "high-street" chain stores (a total rip off - i paid 300 pounds for my last pair of glasses), and allowing the optician to know that you want their opinion and expertise so they can charge for their time appropriately.

You are welcome. I also ended up buying a pair from goggles4u and was very impressed with their service. I think it took 10 days for my glasses to arrive and they are spot on, apart from the day-glo pink case. Quidco pay 10% as well.

You should go to India - full professional eye exam, high quality frames and prescription lenses for £20. I always stock up when I go there.
