Would be useful if you gave a model number for the Hitachi.

Stick 'external+drive' into the search, there are loads.

You want a 2.5" one preferably as these are USB powered, 3.5" usually require a seperate power supply i.e a plug.

How about giving your current drive a good clear out?

IF you have a Best Buy nearby, buy the Seagate Freeagent Go 500 GB for £44.97 reserved for in-store collection.
- nice design (Aluminium top, rubberised bottom and a super sleek design
- 5 year replacement warranty with Seagate
- Very nice case for the Freeagent Go is available here, in case you want to carry it around with you.

Amazon also have a variation of it in stock, but it only comes with a 2 year warranty. Amazon's price does include delivery so.

There's some in Tesco, not particularly cheap however, but good if you're in a pickle.

If you had 1gb memory, maybe one stick has become loose?

A good program (That's safe) is Crap Cleaner, its free and it will clear all the unnecessary clutter from your pc/laptop.

thats a different type of memory (ram), sounds like you have too much stuff stored on your hard drive which will be measured in GB. (you should be able to find out how big it is in my computer or similar)
first step is to clear out stuff you dont need and then empty recycle bin and see if you need one.

tbh external harddrive is more a backup thing as not really convenient to leave them plugged into the laptop all the time with trailing cables etc.

if you use it in a fixed place then fair enough and a hardrive with its own power supply would be good as its cheaper than the smaller 'portable' ones that take power from usb ports.
for a portable drive they are a little under £1 per 1GB and the bigger ones £1 per 2GB.
harddrives are posted on deals section 'almost' a million times per day so just check your budget and needs (maybe compare size to current harddrive) and something will be around.

you could also try upgrading the internal drive yourself but sounds like you'd not want to (i know i dont :))

Bammy - I use Ccleaner as heard that was pretty good from on here, would thast be a similar sort of thing? Not sure what u mean about the 'stick'...I had a man in to take a look ages ago and he changed the one insde from 512 to 1gb (I believe).

Brilly - Thanks for ur reply....I really am not very technically minded soz...have defo cleared as much out as poss. yh the laptop is fixed pretty much in one place so that's not an issue. Will take a look at deals then hun

Thanks all sooo much for ur help xx

If you right click "My Computer" and click "Properties" it will tell you what memory you have in there.

If it turns out you still have 512mb, then it could mean one of the memory sticks that's installed in the back of the laptop, in the memory compartment has worked itself loose.

OR

Your man didn't replace anything :|
