My old gas oven has a fault where it ignites fine but as soon as let go off the gas button, the gas flows stops. The Grill function in the same compartment works absolutely fine.

From my initial findings, the problem I believe is the thermocouple. The copper wire is lose (can be detached easily) from the head. I’m guessing because of this, the oven doesn’t sense that the oven is producing heat so the gas flow cuts out.

It’s a very difficult oven to take out and reach to the other end of the thermocouple so replacing the whole thing is really difficult. So I was wondering if anyone know if I could reattache it via soldering or soldering paste or any other method?

Would highly recommend getting a local gas plumber in. For the sake of £55 and half an hour it might well save a lot of your own time and stress.

If it was only £55 but from past experience, it's a minimum of £100.

Just wondered if anyone knew whether it can be easily soldered on as that's something I can easily do.

even if you can, it may effrect the overall performance of the thermocouple.
wouldn't a soldered joint creat an extra resistance and effect the voltage of the thermocouple which are in miliamps?

can't you change the thermocouple? somewhere must sell spares

If it cost £100 in the past then it should be a non standard thermocouple as universal ones (which yours appears to be) are a few pounds to buy and you may have been ripped off. Most I have ever charged is £75 and that was a £40 thermocouple. Worst case, get someone in and get a price. Please do not start soldering.

Yes, could look at parts but because the unit is old and is integrated into a really tight space, getting it out is really difficult. And so far, I can't seem to find the other end for the thermocouple to connect to.

The £100 wasnt for thermocouple but it seems our local rate is around £70 an hour!

So how does the copper wire usually attached to the head? I'm guessing it needs to be disconnected at some point as it appears that the head needs to be detached as its screwed on on the other side of the little bracket which is then nut and bolted with the other end?

Yes there is usually a small bracket which both nuts tighten up onto and the head sits in the flame at one end while the other end screws directly into the gas valve or assembly. They are not designed to be repaired. A reasonably experienced gas plumber should be able to change a thermocouple in under an hour. I would highly recommend getting a GS plumber in and spending £70 if needs be, it won't be as difficult for him/her as it seems to be.
