PARENTS (MID 50'S) BUYING LAPTOP ADVICE NEEDED!!!!!

Hi folks, need some advice on buying a new laptop, well its not for me its for my parents in their mid 50's. I dont really know much about laptops to give advice so thought i'd ask you lot as i see there is usually lots of laptop deals on here.!
Right they have got a laptop already a HP one (no not the sauce lol) had it a couple of years but very basic got XP on it etc and are connected to the internet via BT WIRELESS HOME HUB but it is so slow connecting to internet and the speed is like the old dial up internet, someone (who knows bit about computers) has told them its because of the processer in the laptop!
They only really use laptop for internet, emails and putting a few pictures on so dont think they need a all singing dancing one! I suggested a notebook style but my mom said she needs a big screen cause of eyesight.... Bless her.
They was going to buy one from currys today all i know it was dell, blue large screen and cost £399 but i told them to hang fire cause i thought (A) I thought it was alot of money for them to shell out for what they would use it for and (b) Thought i'd ask you lot out there who might be able to give some good advice and save them some money (more for my inheritance lol).
Thanks for taking time to read this and look forward to been pointed in the right direction so i can ring them and tell them whats hot and whats not!
Cheers

ive seen a new dell on here for £229 and vat..but we got one from Dixons for daughter with a 17inch screen-webcam etc..£270 before xmas. Have a look at the refurbished ones. Same warranty. Look at pcworld, Dixons and currys online-they all do it with different stock.

its the dell vostro A860 at £282.90 all inc delivery and vat. I have a vostro-its quite heavy but i have the bigger battery(6 cell i think and it lasts maybe 6 or 7 hours depending on settings. Partner's and daughter's lappy lasts at best 2 hours. I am more than happy with it-i dont download much and it sounds like your parents have similar needs. I use it for msn and my photos and shpping etc. It was ready out of the box and has done everything i have wanted. Get more advice though as i said im not technical!!
