I set up a monthly direct debit for road tax for my car last year. My direct debit was going out of my bank around the 1st of every month. My current road tax expired on 1st September this year. Are the direct debits automatically set up again by the DVLA when the current payments expire (unless you tell them that you are no longer the owner)? I have checked my bank account and no new monthly payment went out for the 1st September, however, on the DVLA website (where you can check the tax status of your vehicle), it says that no tax is due until 1st September next year, 2017. I just assumed that the tax would just automatically start up again, if not, that means that I am now 3 days in to not having any tax on my car (not driving it at the moment, as is having repairs done to it at my garage), will I get a fine over this? Thank you.

Mine just continued, wait until Monday it might go off then. If you have Internet banking some systems say when next D/D is due. Failing that just phone them to clarify tomorrow.

I got an email from them to remind me and that they were continuing. They automatically continue.Check your bank in the morning . It might be because the 1st was a Friday and because of weekend it won't be process . It's classed as a new set up and they say on their website new set ups might not come out on the 1st but you can still use your car as you are taxed.

Thank you for the replies. I have checked my email accounts and I never actually received an email - I will wait to see if the money goes out tomorrow.

If it says no tax due till sept 2017 does that not mean it's renewed ?

Exactly

Perhaps it has renewed, but I got no email about it. Also, my final, monthly direct debit went out of my account on 1st August. I will see if the monthly payment goes out tomorrow, however, there is no direct debit scheduled with my bank.

Did you also check your spam folder? And also double check the email address you gave dvla.
