PC Memory

Hi all,

Just putting Vista on my PC & noticed I only had 1GB memory !!

Bit of a noob when dealing with RAM, so need your advice please :)

I ran the Crucial Memory scanner which said I had:

ASUS P4U800-X Motherboard

Which can handle 3 x 1GB (according to Crucial)

Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700,DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*

*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.

Now what is the best to get at a cheap price & where from ???

Thanks

from my experience DDR ram is quite dear, but I'll keep popping in this thread in case someone knows the cheapest spot

You may find a a Socket 478 system to be too slow in general for Vista.

DDR hasn't been used in new computers for several years now so the prices have gone up since it was more common so I guess it'll cost you £30 or more per stick. You can probably get away with just going for another 1GB as 32-bit vista (your hardware probably isn't 64-bit) will run fine with 2GB.

Had my PC for 4 years now - Vista is running OK on it, but planning to start playing Planetside again very soon, so want to bump up memory :)

Hope someone can point me in the right direction of a decent set of 3 x 1gb sticks !!

www.7dayshop.com maybe?
Or someone who has just dismantled an older computer?

They also have this 1 gb Dane-Elec for £24

I got some from this company on E4by emaxusb.
This ram is not cheap.
If you do order from them pay for postal insurance.
i had one stick of ram not arrive.
Claimed took 3 weeks cos post office rules etc.
But coughed up another .Sweet

ddr1 memory is expensive and if your PC requires that your CPU will be lacking not to mention the most important thing which is graphics you would be way better sticking with XP or using the last beta/final version of the new windows7 as its not as demanding on system resources as pants vista and should run happily on on 1gb of ram.

For 3x1gb sticks of pc3200 it will be the best part of £100 and the whole of your PC wont be worth that i wouldn't bother either upgrade the lot or don't bother with anything as throwing good money after bad springs to mind.Your mobo has 3xddr slots so as you haven't mentioned I'm betting that 2 of those slots are used with 2x512mb sticks so your best option is get 1x512mb memory which will cost around £13-£15 but you should make sure that all sticks are the same manufacturer and the same speed/timings or at least the same timings as mixing manufacturers and speed can and will result in problems like blue screens and being slower than it was and random lockups.

PNY i would stay away from its not very good when upgrading don't buy rubbish memory as its the worst thing you can do stick with the best as it will usually cost the same or a couple of quid more Corsair,Crucial or Kingston especially with ddr1 as they have the best chance of playing nice and working with other makers of ram already installed in your board.

Kingston 1gb at play £25.99 which is what you should expect as 1gb of ram at that time was a lot to all be on one stick.

Other good manufacturers are OCZ which will cost a fortune in ddr or the likes of Geil or Patriot.

Sticking with Vista as it was free - as I said, PC isnt running slow at all, but dont want it to cave in while playing Planetside lol

Yes - 3 slots, 2 are currently being take up by 512mb sticks - hence why I wanted to ditch the lot for 3 x 1gb sticks

mmm - what a pain in the ass that is :(

Can I lob in 1 x 1GB with the others then to make 2GB, or does it still all need to be paired etc ?

Cheers

I deal with computers everyday of my life servers and workstations so i know what I'm talking about you have a couple of gb of ddr memory just because you've had no issues doesn't make it good its rubbish and has poor compatibility and is not dependable Pc world sell it that says it all.

Go on a computer forum and recommend PNY and say that PNY is good and see whats said its cheap that's all that's good and with the price you quoted £53 for 2gb and the Kingston coming in at £52 see what people choose if its so good why do none of the big retailers sell it?
like ebuyer and scan simple answer its pants.

Here you go 2 posts of some age regarding PNY so going back a good time and its ***** back then.

You can try that but compatibility might be a issue make sure that they are of a similar spec. You can have 2x512mb and 1x1gb i should think that the board will be in dual channel so the 2 channels with the matched pair of 512mb ram will operate a little faster than mismatched sizes and the 3rd and final slot will be single channel so it should be fine

Any links for a compatible 1gb stick ?

Thanks all
