Hello,

I'm not very good at these things but I need to upgrade my PC memory and I was wondering where it would be best and least expensive to get. .....and which one to get as well

Here's something one computer specialist wrote me about it:

All memory chips will run at the slowest chips speed. The current 256Mb memorys speed is bound to be slower then 333 or 400 MHz. But a slower speed means greater system stability.
So I would tend to go for DDR333, ideally a single 1Gb rather then 2x512Mb. Even though the slower (older) speed tends to be more expensive.

Your PCs Motherboard (Jetway 845E4) may not even work properly with the faster 400 Mhz chips.

That's all I know.
Thanks for any help!

your motherboard supports up to ddr266, not even 333 i'm afraid

# Jetway 845E4 Socket 478 ATX Motherboard

# General Features:
# Intel 845E chipset
# Intel 8201DB I/O Controller Hub chipset
# Hyper-Threading technology
# ATX form factor
# Socket 478
# Supports 400/533 MHz FSB
# Supports up to 2 GB DDR RAM (DDR200/266)
# Two (2) UDMA/100/66/33 IDE controllers
# One (1) floppy controller
# AC'97 integrated audio CODEC
#3
Thank you both!

Shanecr, so what's the optimum I could get to improve my pc? Will it improve my pc, is it worth it? Or is it too old Pc to upgrade?
(Yeah I recognise AC'97 audio codec from the list)

Cheers!

most likely 2x512mb would be enough for you and you should notice a performance increase. any more might really be fully used by your pc
#6
what do you mean by fully used? is that bad? you mean 2x512 is better than 1x1gb?
#7
Who is this "computer specialist", He seems to have wrote a load of spin just to confuse you!
#8
well no, you could get a 1Gb stick. what do you use your pc for? if its just surfing net etc its ulikely your pc would need more than 1GB ram.

:-D lol

I am a student and I have unlimited broadband so I browse a lot. But I don't play games. Uni work and internet. That's mostly it.
So what's the maximum my pc can take?

:)

Yeah, Does depend what you use it for, If its for general internet another 512mb stick (making 768mb) and should be more than enough for internet use.

On an older computer you want to spend as little money as possible, The old DDR memory isn't that cheap.

Checkout the for sale section here to, Someone was recently selling PC2700 memory.

'computer specialist' is actually some programmer who had rented a room in the house I live because he was transferred to work over here.
he advised me to upgrade my computer, done some scans (also found on internet) and wrote this letter to my close friend, as he wanted to upgrade my pc..... I had some doubts about his competence :giggle:

Thanks, but is it enough to judge by just DDR only? 'computer specialist' told me that there are more factors needed to be checked?..

You need to ask for one stick of 512MB PC2700 DDR 333Mhz unbuffered non-ECC RAM.

That will take you to 768Meg, which will be more than enough for general use, and should give your computer a significant boost.

This looks good, and is only £21 delivered:

But shanecr said that my pc wouldn't support ddr333, just 266.
And is there 768mb memory?

Thank you, thank you for your patience with me ;)

maybe i should be clearer lol, the speed it will go to is 266. you could fit 333 but it would run as 266. thats all. if you were buying from ebay, 266 may be a bit cheaper.

I had some doubts about his competence :giggle:

Well what he has wrote seems complete waffle if i'm honest, The first part didn't really make much sense, More to the point, Why explain in such a long winded fashion, He should've just said "You need some 512mb Pc2700 as that should speed up your pc and be more than enough for what you need", Simple!! :giggle:

Well about this one: 'computer specialist' wrote the letter to my friend or house mate or a person who inherited me as a sister :p (that is one and the same person) because he wanted to make me a gift by upgrading my pc and he understands absolutely nothing about computers - he just started using one and learning to type and browse www :) he most likely didn't even get what's scribbled in that letter :giggle: bless him

+ to addition maybe someone could tell me, why I cannot see my .gif picture near my threads?
Is it because I'm still a 'matchstick' lol
