Bit of info from you please. Which brands have you tried and not liked

Barry Norman pickled onions are the best I've tasted. A bit more expensive than most but you can taste the difference.

Make your own - Pickling vinegar , onions , pickling spices and essentially add chillies to taste . Leave for a month or so in sealed jar/jars - amazing oO

Are there chillies in normal pickled onion jars or an optional extra

Aldi do big fat strong pickled onions which are not soggy, but they only seem to do them at Xmas.
Might have to wait 11 months.

Had not had a good pickled onion for a long time and picked up Baxters in Sainsbury's and it was like being a kid again just like silverskins used to be and they are not expensive.

Mainly tried store own brands and Haywards, don't really like the little silverskin ? ones in sweet vinegar either. Did try garner pickled shallots, which were quite good, but a bit pricey for what I'm looking for

Are pickling onions still around? How do you make sure they stay crunchy ? Hate to go to all that effort to chuck them away lol !

Trick to keeping them crunchy is to peel the onions then leave them soaking in brine for a couple of days before you bottle them. I use two ounces of salt per pint of water. Pickling vinegar is expensive so I get normal malt vinegar and boil it with sainsbury s pickling spices. That way you can adjust it to your taste. A few chillies added in pack a punch. Easiest way to peel the onions is to pour boiling water over them first. Messy job but so much better than shop bought

There are chillies in " normal" pickled onions / pickling spices . But if you want your pickled onions a bit "tangier" (for want of a better word ) add whole hot chillies or chilli seeds to your jar . Chilli powder doesn't really work .
I freeze my own hot chillies and then cut them up and add them to my pickled onions . I even buy the jars of pickled onions (when they are cheap -after Xmas) add chillies (then reseal) for a more tangy onion - still crisp and crunchy after a few months and far more flavour (if you like a tangier flavour) - great with a nice piece of your favourite cheese :)

You should come down our Pub . Once a month (ish) we have Cheese , Pickle and Wine evenings . Not trying to be couth at all , just the strongest pickles ,weirdest cheeses and homemade wines that folks make and bring in - and of course normal cheese wine and pickles . Not posh at all and the pub loves it as you need plenty of beer to wash down some of the offerings !
