You have to buy it or want to buy it? ;)

If you are anywhere near Birmingham I'd suggest going to the jewellery quarter there, dozens of shops with thousands of rings to choose from even have one made to your own design, cheap as you can play one off against the other and they are desperate for business. If you don't come away with one you'll never find one anywhere.

This is true, but I would quiz her more. Does she want a specific shape or a traditional round solitare and what sort of setting? Remember she might wear it every day for the rest of her life - hopefully.
There are some very good on-line sites now that people on here have recommended in the past. The best quality stones have no imperfections but the average person can't see any inperfections on a medium quality stone. Decide what you want and how much you can afford, see how much it is on-line and then take the print-out to the jewellry quarter and haggle.

took my mrs to jewelery quarter in Brum and said choose one!....then haggled a bit and got quite a good deal.

If you want to minimise costs......Argos!

I'm just trying to get an idea of what all the letter s and stuff mean. I have told her to pick one but she doesnt really know what she wants, so i'm trying to get back ground information to try and and show i'm actually taking an interest !

probably looking at about £750-1k.

what internet sites have been recommend previously - does anyone know ?

Why not go to the jewellery quarter and either choose one between you or note several of the ones she likes whilst there and then surprise her with your own choice from that list?

Not really that romantic for her to pick her own ring IMO, but maybe if she gives you some choices then it will be your decision.
