Posting item on Gumtree

I have an item listed on Gumtree and someone is happy to pay me first to then post it to them. They can pay via Bank Transfer or Paypal. Is that safe? I guess it's no different than doing it on her…

They can pay via Bank Transfer or Paypal. Is that safe? I guess it's no different than doing it on here, so I've asked for bank transfer as I know you can claim back on Paypal.

This ok you think?

Thanks

if you ask for payment via Paypal Gift, or Friends and Family as i believe it is called now, they shouldn't be able to get their money back either.

There a very good chance it's a scam. Be careful. Lots of people get scammed on gumtree.

incorrect. they can claim a chargeback - someone accessed their account fraudulently and sent this money to a total stranger. you don't have a leg to stand on and paypal won't help as you abused their free service, and didn't pay for the version that gives protection (which costs them money to provide and enforce)

bank transfer - as far as I know, there isn't really a comeback from this. hugely trustworthy (irresponsible) of the buyer to send you this money considering this is a preferred method of scammers to receive money, but hey, if you know you're genuine, there's nothing for them to worry about.
I've seen articles where people have mistakenly hit the wrong digit on a BACS transfer and not been able to recover the money despite the banks acknowledging it was sent in error. i haven't seen any reports of scams using bank transfer unless anyone else has any newer info, bank transfer is safe

Accept the payment by bank transfer, that is pretty safe and you shouldn't have any issues.

On Gumtree just deal with cash and people face to face. 95% of the time is a scam, save all the hassle and just deal with people and hard cash.
#6
But what if they send me a bank transfer from an account they've hacked?
#7
Sell it cash on collection only, or bank transfer and then contact bank to ensure the payment is fine, then post , personally I would make them collect only on Gumtree

Then you'll likely lose the money but let's be honest, that's unlikely though.

But whats happens if the cash is fake? You can only take so many precautions. I've always accepted payment by bank transfer for expensive items on Gumtree. I've never had an issue.

It's a known scam - stick with cash on collection only as if they pay via paypal and collect you have no proof of delivery so if/when they claim for 'item not received' you have absolutely no comeback.

In the last PayPal update they have now excluded items which are collected I believe. I believe the update was on the 16th this month. You would have received an email, however as most people, you probably you didn't read this.

However they could still scam by reporting it as an unauthorised transaction.

To the OP, you have all your answers. Not really sure what else you want....?

probably only offering the bank transfer option to look better - i expect if you chose it then suddenly theyd have problems and would need to fall back to paypal

I'd say stay clear.

It MAY be legit and the buyer MIGHT be genuine, but I'd accept cash on collection only when selling anything on GT or FB.

He now says he will buy it via eBay, so I'll do that.

I guess it's no different from if a new user on here pays first. They can just do what this guy could do on gumtree.

It's a scam. Did he say he was working on an oil rig so can you send it to a family member? Is what you're selling it expensive? If you have to use Gumtree like others have said cash on collection only.

I've sold via Gumtree and accepted BT without issue.
