I have to say that in all honesty it's quite common for them to be noisy. I have had 2 and both quite loud. The first ran hot, and if vertical ran hotter, so hot in fact I wouldn't leave it vertical. The second runs cool horizontal and even cooler vertical.

Being identical, there should be no difference but there is. For a pound it's worth a try. Your other consideration is then physical stability. Make sure it can't be knocked over.

Dont wate your money/time on notebook coolers, it will just blow slight air on to the ps4 and wont do anything to cool it down plus the fan is tiny.
Next time you notice the noise while your playing a game, hold down the ps button and close the application, see if the noise stops. If so its normal, mine does the same if im playing for a couple of hours or so

Mine would get most noisy playing Destiny which is no doubt very processor intensive so it obviously depends a lot on what you are doing. I don't have that problem now as it died oO Just off to the Post Office with it now lol.

You could also buy some rubber feet cheaply to raise it up a bit as the underside is totally flat. Search "StarTech.com 1-1/4" Dia" on amazon

Can you clarify what the ventilation is behind it? How much space is there? or is it in a cabinet?

Mine is flat on a shelf but has tons of room behind which gets warm, but seems to be enough ventilation for it.

Does the ps4 have vents on the sides which draws air in? Would explain why the ps4 gets hot when put in vertical stand. If so important to have space on sides too

I'd say 4 inches behind it. It's in an open unit.
