Upgraded the youngest from a PS3 (years old but still going strong) to a PS4 for Christmas, and thought it was odd that it took hours and hours for him to download updates. Turns out he is only get about 3.3kbps over wifi! Never had these issues with the PS3, or any other console in the house.

I only get around 30mbps on Fibre (old house in a village) but every other device works fine in any part of the house.
I have tried changing the router settings (Sky Broadband and Hub) but not having much luck. Will Homeplugs solve/help the problem or is the PS4 faulty?

could try a powerline adaptor. if it's an old house, the brick walls will block a lot of the signal.

hard wire is always better than WiFi . much stabler connection . I suprsingly get faster speed from wired connection compared to WiFi and I have 200mbps . although I am with virgin and using a superhub 3.0 but yeah if you can get power line . just seen some posted for £25 about 10 mins ago .

is it factory setup PS4? no external themes or anything else been installed?
how far away is the PS4 from the router? have you tried a different position.

Or maybe a different channel on your router

Unfortunately not, there is no socket nearby and it would be very difficult to get one from the router up into his bedroom because of where the socket is currently.

I have a PS4 of my own, this has no issues but is only one room away rather than upstairs and on the opposite side of the house.

Run a speed test from another wifi device, it could be your channel on the router,

Swap the new PS4 with your setup, see if it works?

Factory standard, no themes. PS4 is upstairs and the opposite side of the house, but his PS3 and Xbox 360 work fine in that room.

Will a channel change help? Currently set on Auto, do I just pick a channel on the router settings and that's it?

any reason?

You can get any length ethernet cable

We have our running under the floorboards to the places it's needed.

PS4 wireless speeds are abysmal and it is a known issue

You could try changing the MTU on the Network setup, this worked for me ( I use 1473) and has worked for many others.

You can see how to do it here, hope this helps.

The wifi issue on PS4 is not something new. That's a design problem. Mine is a C chassis and it also has very low download speeds when it's on and connected to wifi but it works just fine when it's on standby and downloads on max speed. If you search you'd see lots are having issues but not all know about this because they're using fast speed internets. The problem become apparent when your modem and your connection are both basics. The only permanent fix to the issue is to use a cables connection to ps4.

could also try a wifi booster, plug one upstairs near his bedroom. an connect ps4 to it. worked well for my brother

Got some powerline adaptors from Currys for £23, problem is solved. 8)

Move the PS4 into the room where the router is temporarirly and see if the wifi signal improves, also try changing the router channel to either 1 or 6 its preferable to not leave it on auto, you could also download inssider to see what channel other devices in the area are using and switch to one of those.
