I'd go for a DS Lite, my kids (similar age) enjoy theirs.

DS Lite anyday. Just not enough decent games on the PSP to make it worth the extra expense. Some of the better PSP games would not suitable for an 8yr old anyway.

I bought my daughter (she's 10) a PSP last year and it's now sitting in a drawer.

This year she wants a DS lite as this is what all her friends have.

I would say the PSP is great but more suited to an adult - the games for kids are limited where as DS lite has loads of kids games - I''m spoilt for choice.

Check out Toys R Us - they have a bundle deal in white/black with two games for £99.99.

The gamestation has a deal 99.99 with one free selected game

Choice of 4 reasonable games.

Don't forget quidco if you buy it from there.

My daughter wants a pink one which I've had to pre-order at full price.

Try going into your local store, or phoning them up as they may have stock, whereas the online store does not.

As an owner of both a PSP and DS Lite I would have to argue in favour of Nintendo. Though the PSP screen is pretty resilient the clamshell nature of the DS Lite makes it far more practical. As mentioned above the catalogue of games on the DS Lite are also more suitable.

Don't get me wrong, I love titles like Ultimate Ghouls N' Ghosts, Ridge Racer, Wipeout and Loco Roco but I doubt younger gamers would enjoy the best titles on PSP. Whereas the DS has an extensive selection of fantastic titles and will more than likely continue reign supreme in the handheld market.

p.s. my 7yr old bro loves his DS to pieces :)

Not all are kids games, the brilliant Advance Wars DS rivals (and beats) a lot of PC strategy games. The forthcoming age of empires DS does look very good as well.
#9
Thanks for the replies:) but doesn't the size of the screen make game playing difficult?
#10
The DS has two screens and most games use both at the same time. The DS games are excellent and also playing games on-line with the DS is free! Multi player Mario Kart is great, my kids (and I) love it. Also as previously mentioned the DS is more robust than the PSP.

I've certainly had no issues regarding screen size, it is fantastically clear and crisp on the Lite model :)

- Totally agree sbear, this ridiculous notion that anything Nintendo related is synonymous with kids games is absurd. Within a month of owning one I gave into temptation and bought New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart, Tetris DS, Phoenix Wright and Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan to name but a few. Advance Wars is also on the shopping list as I loved the first two on the GBA.

There's something for everyone on DS!

DS is certainly the best, have a PSP, even though I have at least 30-40 of the top games, it just doesn't do it for me or my kids, there is no innovation on the software front for the PSP.

The PSP will shortly be going on EBay.

As for the DS, games are superb, so much that there are 4 in my house, link up and internet play excellent.

Thanks again for the replies:-D ;-)

What about playing roms (backed up games) is it easy?

I know its illegal but games are too expensive when you have a demanding 8 yr old who'll want what his mates have.

Perhaps a question best avoided on this forum

If he gets togther with his mates many games allow you to play multi-player games with only the one game cartridge.

There is a devide called a "supercard" (I think thats what its called) that enables you to load several ROMS onto a single SD card. The advantage is that you can back up all your games onto one SD card and not have to swap them in and out or carry them all with you. I guess it could be abused and also store borrowed/downloaded ROMs onto the SD cards. I think someone on another section of this forum was selling a DSLite and Supercard with roms?

People like the word 'sealed' so I don't doubt that for a second!

i own a ds and it is great. and sbear1 if you already own advanced wars ds then there is not much point of getting age of empires because it is basically the same game but not as good. its nothing like the PC versions. Because i own an M3 movie card i can basically have any game i want. i put AOE on and got bored of it after 10 mins. but Advanced wars rules!!

If you are choosing between the DS and PSP and wondering which kind of games you like more. if you like simulation games ie. FIFA, Need for speed etc then i would go for the PSP. but if you like unique games. ie. Trauma centre!!!! then the DS is for you.

I got a DS for my birthday last year, and had a few games for it. this was july, sold it in november. then this year (june) i got a psp, and im in love totally with it..lol ive bought over 20 games, about 30 films. and i guess like ppl have been saying, it is just what ever you fancy. i think even tho i dont like the ds, if you like nintendo, ds is gonna be better for you. and as for kids, the psp games are spot on, but you can maybe get more colourful fun games on ds. i dont like the mario type thing. i love burnout, godfather, footie manager, tekken etc so the ds was never really going to be for me...

my neice is wanting a pink ds lite, for christmas cos her dad has the black one, shes only 5, and loves it lol
