I'm thinking about getting my mum a media player to plug into the TV using HDMI to playback 1080p videos, storage would be from a portable HDD. I've seen plenty listed online, but I'm after something that's a cut above those £20 ones with iffy remote controls.

As it's for my mum it needs to be dead easy to use, reliable, and the remote work when buttons are pressed lol. Subtitle support is also important. Can anyone point me in the right direction please? BTW, her internet is utter crap so NowTV and Chromecast isn't really an option unfortunately. Thank you HUKDers.

WDTV Live but only if you can get it for around £50-£60

plays anything and subtitle support is excellent (sub, srt etc)
