If you can stretch, do it yourself with a synology! I started with a wd and had issue after issue with performance and stability. Maybe things have changed but never looked back after going to synology

How many WD nas' have you used in the past if they haven't let you down? Funnily enough WD are the only brand of hard drive to let me down and I've been purchasing pc parts for the best part of 2 decades.

It's not the most common brand for nas devices so surely your best bet it to compare reviews you can find online? (if you are set on this brand)

I currently have a Synology 215 with 2 x 6tb WD reds, superb bit of kit and very versatile.

Agree if you value your data and flexibility Synology at least 2 bay every time.

Thanks for advice. Do you guys have any recommendations of synology to look at? should I have WD red inside (2x6tb)?

just looking at Synology and have found :

Synology Disk Station DS216+II 2 Bay SATA 6Gb/s NAS Server

&

WD Red 6TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive - Intellipower SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch

Would that be a decent set up? works out roughly £100 more than the WD enclosure & drives

I've only recently converted to a NAS setup, bought a synology 716+ 8tb (2x4tb). loving it, nice to know now that I should never lose my music or photos and its great to have a plex server setup with it also.

Have a look at the Amazon warehouse, sometimes some amazing deals pop up.

Synology Disk Station DS216+II 2 Bay SATA 6Gb/s NAS Server : https://****/4mTnxO

Synology DS216PLAY 2 Bay Desktop Enclosure : https://****/YHix0q

&

or this one which seems quite cheap -

Synology DS216j 2 Bay Desktop : https://****/uqVVhV

any help would be really appreciated.. just can't work out the difference between the 3 but seem to be quite highly rated. I've decided upon the WD red.. just the enclosure to work out now.

Depends what you want to use it for and how future proof you want to be.

Best bet is to look at the Synology comparison page

Pretty much just for storage.. so swaying towards the 2nd one as the first is £60+ with features I probably would never use
