Any help or advice would be very welcome. I don't have much knowledge of these things so please let me know your suggestion.

the philips dvp range are best for this if you have a small-ish (gb size wise) usb stick.

otherwise get a ps3, can handle any external and play it.

No PS3 please.

I only need a dvd recorder that records from SKY/Freeview etc and plays movies from my *portable hard drive* with USb 2.0 support. BTW: My hard drive does *not* have a power source it takes all the juice from the PC (at the moment)

I have a Philips DVDR3597H/05 which might be roughly what you're looking for. Hard drive of 250GB, DVD recorder as well, has USB 2.0 input, can play DivX files and has both SCART input (for recording), SCART output and HDMI output. I record TV shows off my standard Sky box via SCART and also attach a USB drive to play DivX movies. One nice touch - you can now do firmware upgrades via the USB, saving you having to burn a CD or DVD.

The only thing that you may not like is that it, somewhat ridiculously in this day and age, only has an analogue tuner, so if you want Freeview, you'll have to feed it in via SCART from an external source. Comet has it for 150 quid at the moment (I haven't looked at other places, you may find it cheaper elsewhere).

Philips have introduced a Freeview version (DVDR5570H/05), but it's 330 quid at Comet with the only difference being Freeview vs. analogue - 180 quid diff when an external Freeview box is 20 quid?! I just can't believe that price...

Thanks. I will check it out. I didn't want to spend so much since I already have a portable drive but still 150 quid is very reasonable. Thanks again.

While I am at it :

Has anybody used a portable hard drive with this Philips model: PHILIPS DVDR3480? This does not have a hard drive but has a USB connection. This is half the price of the 3597 model. Again, my portable hard drive does not have a power source - it takes everything from the USB port.
