I'll try and make this as simple as possible.

I have 2 cars - a Lexus and a BMW.

The Lexus has a private plate on it that was bought for me as a gift. I ultimately want to get this registration assigned to my new car, the BMW. The BMW also has a private plate on it but I want to remove it and sell it on.

What's the easiest way about going about the swap? Am I right in thinking that I have to apply to get both private plates removed (on retention), and then apply the private registration from the Lexus to the BMW? It seems like it would be simple enough with 1 private plate involved but having 2 of them is a bit confusing. Just looking at the simplest, and hopefully cheapest, option.

Thanks to anyone that can help!

Thanks for the reply, however I know how to get a plate removed from a vehicle. My question is more to do with getting the whole swapping/retaining done in one go, and with minimal cost.

i.e. I want to take the private plate off the Lexus, assign that to the BMW, whilst simultaneously removing the plate off the BMW and putting it on retention

I think you will need to put them both on retention, then reassign the number to your bmw. Unless you can go to a dvla office I think it would be the only way.

I did just this the other day you remove it from one vehicle put it onto a retention certificate then you go to put plate onto another vehicle it will ask you for the document ref of the car you are putting it on. then you use the retention certificate number you were previously given. there is just one £80 fee

Thanks. Does this still apply when the car you want to transfer the plate TO has a plate you also want to keep?

i.e. would the BMW plate automatically go on retention if I take the reg off the Lexus and transfer to the BMW?

You have to do it for each => 2@ £80-00. I've just done it

Best bet is to give them a ring..I know when I put my private plate on my car 2 weeks ago I could do it online, they asked for log book details and the retention certificate number and it was done in 5 mins.
it took longer for the insurance company to change the plate over.

thanks a lot for the responses, much appreciated

You put the BMW plate on retention, and apply to transfer Lexus plate to the BMW.

This way, you have 1 going on retention, and 1 being transferred directly to the BMW.
